Funny how Intel's Pentium went for deeper pipelines and AMD's Athlon went for efficiency. Seems Intel's focus is back on efficiency now though.
I found this while looking up info on the K7 to compare it with a coppermine P3. Thought someone else might enjoy the old read.
In short, the Athlon's core, cache, and bus designs give it plenty of headroom to scale in the coming months and years. In fact, scalability is central to the Athlon's design. (Not surprising, considering the design team formerly worked on Digital's Alpha.) Although its deep pipelining and high transistor count should allow for excellent clock-for-clock performance, AMD claims the processor was designed primarily for high frequencies rather than for high per-clock performance.
