Just found out that my company's gonna perform the layoffs next week.

i work for a private company and i posted a few months ago about their announcement. looks like they booked about 2 conference rooms in our building for 8 hours each.

any guess as to how they're gonna conduct this stuff?

i'm guessing they won't try to squeeze everyone together in the rooms and perhaps do it as a batch of groups throughout the day.

or...

there's the "good" (survivors) room and the "bad" (laid off) room

safe to say, i'm pretty darn nervous but there's nothing i can do. i do plan to go to the gym throughout the day like i did in college and cut 20 pounds at least 😛.

update:

Well the day has come and gone. I still have my job, but unfortunately some of the people (good, hard working people) who sit near me and are on my team were let go. A few hundred were let go today and it's the end for now (according to mgmt)

It was painful to watch people you worked with pick up their things and go. it's hard to say anything besides "bye."

The way things were executed was they phone called the impacted people 1 by 1 into the rooms throughout the day until we got positive confirmation late afternoon it had ended and that everyone could relax. I really think there could have been a better way to implement this. Perhaps give the manager a list of the people and get it over with early in the morning instead of a day long's worth of agony.

I don't feel as happy as i thought i'd be. you still kind of get the lingering sense of fear that more cuts may happen in the future if the economy continues to spiral downward.

By far one of the most stressful days of my life and everyone kind of just sat at their desk not working and waiting for the phone call. At least for now i can sleep a bit better with a lighter cloud over me.

Can't they just do it quick and clean, Trump style? You're fired!

Did they hire an efficiency expert?
But seriously, I feel for you. My company went through the same a week or so ago.

i don't think my company would be able to explain how they decided to fire 20% (well over 1500) of our workforce on a single day.

in cali, getting fired means you don't get unemployment (at least so i heard without googling it), which would piss many people off.

funny you ask this. now that i recall... sometime mid last year, the new head honcho overseeing IT distributed a big (forrester) survey to all the employees. at the time, we thought that this was just a simple survey to try to improve the work environment and seek feedback from the little people. little did we know, the execs probably used this as a tool to help get the transition to the new iceberg moving.

Yeah you should probably Google that.

If they expect it to take 8 hours, I'd hope they're doing it in batches. :Q

would be a total bummer if they called me at 4:30 PM as part of the last batch too

That's pretty standard. Fired = for cause = no unemployment. Laid off = not your fault = unemployment. Quit = your choice = no unemployment. There are exceptions.

I think he was referring to compuwiz's post about Trump. He's not in danger of being fired, he's in danger of being laid off. Not sure how California is going to continue paying unemployment benefits though, seeing as how they're out of money and all that. 😉

Getting fired = you did something wrong

Ok here's the way not to get fired:

Go to therapy with your gf and get hypnotised
Go into work and sit with the Bob's
Tell the Bob's you haven't been missing work
Get promoted

You forgot the stealing $300k part.

ask them if this is part of the synergy-related headcount adjustment goal. They'll be so impressed by your corporate lingo that they'll promote you to middle management

How long is unemployment benefits for?

hmm iirc, 6 months but i believe bush administration pushed through a temporary 6 month extension. therefore, it's 1 year. i'm not sure if lump sump severance plays a role or not.

Either gonna be good and bad with the two meetings happening at the same time (i had that happen to me once, was in the "good" room luckily), or everyone will be called in one by one (would explain why it's booked for 8 hours).

IIRC there's a difference between being "fired" and being "laid off", as far as unemployment is concerned.

If 20% of the company was gone in a day, that would probably fall under "laid off", since it's hard to believe that 20% of the company made a mistake worth losing their job over in one day.

When my dad was let go a couple of years ago, the guy processing all the paper work for the layoffs was told to pack his stuff up when he was done.
