I own a PS3. The system has a lot of solid exclusives. It's nice to buy games and not have to worry what DRM it uses or if my system will run it. A lot of genres also dont really exist on the PC. Action-adventure and 3rd person shooters aren't that common. Nor are platforming titles.

The PC can run most games at higher resolution and has better image quality though. Plus it allows modding. Some games like RTS and first person shooters don't adapt well to console. PC's biggest problem though is hardware cost and game publishers' poor attitude towards the platform.

Too much fanboyism on both sides. Nothing wrong with owning both. I've got all my bases covered. Both get equal playtime.

There's a difference between making an honest buck and making a mint by creating an artificial need. You may as well argue in favor of mafia "protection" rackets being an honest business venture.
If you think about this critically I am optimistic that you will realize that these are completely different things. I also think you can figure out for yourself why Nintendo offering the Wii for sale to those who would like to purchase it is accceptable, while the Mafia using the threat of force to extort money from victims is not.

PCs effortlessly hook up to TVs

while ive stayed out of this shit show, this one is only 1/2 true. they may hook up effortlessly now with the advent of HDMI and display ports but before that it was a PITA of adapters/cords/buggy drivers/horrid resolution scaling/shitty tvs

I still don't agree, but I've said my piece and am not going to argue any more. At the end of the day it's a free market economy, and while it irks me that the consumers have chosen unwisely, they have chosen and not been coerced. To that end, you're right, my analogy to protection rackets was off-base.
