Fun mindless adventure movie. I thought National Treasure was a little less outlandish, however.

Did they ever explain how the ironclad got all the way across the ocean? If they did, I must have missed it.

One of the worst movies ever made. Tries to be Bondsian without Bonds. It has plot holes you can drive a Humvee through. Guess that's what you get for making a movie out of a Clive Cussler book...

africa used to be lush with forests and water. there was a huge rain storm 150 years ago or so (from the time the movie was placed in) which brough the level of water up exceeding high. irconclad went up river. river dried up. forest turned to dust. the men in the ironclad died of a disease which was unknown, but 300 folks died of it (if i remember correctly)

Read the Book, screw the movie.

I read the book a few years back and loved it. That was my first Clive Cussler novel and I've been reading them ever since. I however thought the movie could have been better with adapting the book to the big screen.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I guess the movie was fine if you like ridiculously unrealistic adventure. I don't like movies that auotmatic rifles and missles from choppers can't hit anything, but a cannon buried in the sand for 150 years can bring down a helicopter. But that's just me. They also never explained how an ironclad ship, which was not built for an ocean crossing managed to cross the ocean. Oh, also why and how were the solar panels rigged up to be operated wirelessly from a chopper? Come on, you know the plot holes, there are so many of them. But if it's an action flick you're after, and it doesn't matter that it's so insanely unbelievable, then go for it.

Thats great, but doesn't explain my original question. How did they cross the Atlantic to get to the Sahara? I recall one of the characters even saying that an ironclad would never survive the journey across the ocean. So assuming that the Sahara was once a lush forest full of rivers and such (which is complete bs, by the way), how did the ironclad actually get there to go up the river?

you are crazy. this movie was absolute garbage. i went into it knowing it would be pretty bad, but even then I was disappointed.

this is one movie I recommend you DON'T see. the action is just way WAY over the top but not in a good way. its over the top in a laughable way, and a bad laughable way that just makes you just put your head down and shake in disapointment. it tries to get the Indiana Jones feel to it but fails miserably.

DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE!

Wow, lets pick holes in a film because it has something unrealistic in it.
Lets say a film is bad because of this.
Wait, there goes 90% of films not meant to be outlandish (ie: Sci-Fi).

there is a HUGE difference between "sci fi unrealistic" and "stupidly absurd unrealistic".

this movie was the latter.

IIRC, luck basically.

The confederate ironclads were much more stable than their union Monitor-type counterparts. They were built on conventional hulls and had at least some freeboard. While certainly not a brilliant idea to cross the Atlantic in such a ship it might have proved possible if no bad weather was encountered.

The Union on the other hand lost a few of their ironclads due to storms and their design.

People that read Clive Cussler's books are willing and able to suspend disbelief.

I liked the movie.

I enjoy Cussler's stuff for what it is - a dash of Oliver Stone pseudo-high brow history, coupled with Indiana Jones/Bond adventure.

I've just never figured out why they - and Matthew McCaughnhey (sp?), were so hell bent on making that book instead of one of the others. MM worked the Hollywood circuit for 7 years to get that book made into a movie. Now the franchise is doomed. Makes no sense.

I was stuck watching it 3 times flying to and back from Germany back in July. It was good the first time, OK the second time, and annoying the third time. Penelope was the most annoying charachter of all.

The movie was about as lame as the book. Okay for a mindless matinee popcorn flick, but that's about it. I've only read that book by Cussler and based on it, haven't bothered with any of his others. Can he actually write a decent book? If so, give me a title and I'll check it out.
