I have to admit, I like it. The previews made me think it was a comedy about band camp or something..and I was mildly dismayed to see it was a drama. But it has a good hook.

Some thoughts:
- You have to appreciate marching bands / music to like this movie. Having spent countless hours watching the USC marching band practice at all hours of the day I can relate to this movie.
- You have to appreciate black culture. It's a very racially themed movie. If the closest you've come to a black person is watching the Cosby show, you'll probably not "get" it.
- Plot is cliche'd. Nothing we haven't seen before. Very unclimactic ending IMO.
- Character development, sound design, and super editing more than make up for it. Great screenwriting too.
- There are some fantastic music sound-off sequences. I can see myself fast forwarding to some of them like I do with fight scenes in kung-fu movies.

Thank goodness I'm not alone:

What're you rolling your eyes at? I'm confused...

As for the movie, I wanted to watch it too, having been in marching band in high school and really loving it (and hating that I didn't do it at one of the biggest university's with a marching band)...maybe I'll find it online :)

What? I liked to sit near the track and do my homework. What's wrong with that? You rather I have sat in a room and posted about "my term paper is due in 2 hours HALP!!" or "Hot gurl in my dorm and I'm impotent HALP!!!" or "Roomate sux0rs...HALP!!" instead of getting actual work done?

I got a DVD copy from Usenet and it was borked at chapter 9. I had to finish watching it so I rented it from Blockbuster. Gonna buy it now. :p

This movie is really good. I thought it would be one of those black comedy movies but was in for a big suprise. I don't think this movie is racially themed at all. The ghetto/ebonic talk was about the only thing racially themed, but even then it only added to the movie, not detract from it. I mean, all the other that happens could happen to anyone. The plot is a little cliche, but how many ways can you twist a sporting/competition movie.

Ugg, don't even get me started on the USC band. I remember those bastards started practice at 4AM on Saturdays just to wake up the residents in halls and on-campus apartments.

I would recommend this movie to anyone.

I was suprised by it, I actually rather enjoyed it. It brought me back to my Drum Corps days. DCI anyone?

Not me, but damn do those kids work!

I go to the DCI show every summer here in Dallas (Lake Highlands). Those kids are amazing.
