Just finished up my 2006 taxes

um... you can file federal for free using the TurboTax link on the IRS website. state costs extra, but since state taxes are mostly rehashed federal numbers, you can do them by hand pretty easily.

Depends on your income.

At what income level do they rip you off? 😕

If you're not one paycheck from the street you can spend $0.78 for snail mail instead.

If you provide your checking account code the IRS will level up your account in 4-5 weeks without any "refund processing" payday loan shark fee.

From the IRS website...

Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers ? 95 million taxpayers ? can take advantage of the Free File program.

By the way OP, depending on what company you're filing from (Turbotax.com for example), there are links out there to prepare your taxes with a discount (15% to 50% off Federal, most likely zero off state). YMMV.

Edit: Refund processing fee sounds like a "loan program".

It doesn't even take 4-5 weeks anymore. I did mine snail mail last year, and I got a refund check in the mail in 2-3 weeks.

I did my taxed this year with hrblock.com instead of turbotax.com. Hrblock it was $10 for federal and $25 for state. If i went with turbotax.com $15 for basic federal and $25 for state. I did eletronic efile, When I filed with hrblock, to pay for the serivce, if they would have taken the money right from my tax return, they want additonal $30 I think. It like wtf. So I just payed with my debit card. I remember few years ago, state used tobe like $5 and federal was like $10. Efile was free.

I'm not sure why the IRS doesn't make it FREE for anyone wanting to file. It has to be cheaper to pay the companies (H&R block online, TaxAct online, TurboTax online, etc) a fee for online filing than paying an IRS agent to sit there and enter the data manually, especially considering what government jobs costs.

😕

its deductible

"Tax preparation fees are deductible in the year paid. This includes the cost of paying someone to prepare your return as well as the cost of tax preparation software and tax publications. Electronic filing fees are deductible."

Thank you. Didn't realize that. So I should be able to take off the fees that I paid last January 2006 for the 2005 tax year preparation through TurboTax.com (since I paid the fee in 2006)?

If I remember correctly, you can claim tax prep fees if the fee is greater than 2% AGI.
So 50 bucks = $2500 AGI. $3000 AGI = $60.

But wtf is a refund processing fee?

pffft WTF
I switched to "Pay with Criedt Card" and the charge is now only $29.90 ($14.95x2 (state and fed)
so an extra $30 to make it easier for them? Gimme a freaking break

If you have a State Farm insurance policy, it is free regardless of income level.
