I just finished putting all my parts together for my frist pc build. I connected all the cables and the psu and all of its cables. I plugged in the power supply and flipped the switch. The computer started up for a second (nothing on monitor, just heard all the fans start up and saw some lights) then it just shuts off. I turned the psu off and on again, the same thing (starts for about 2-3 seconds and then stops)... Any help would be appreciated

Boot with just the basics installed: ram, mobo, processor, heatsink, and video card. Boot outside of the case ie take the motherboard out of the case and see what happens. It could be shorting out or something.

What are your hardware specs? Some motherboards require that your fan be plugged into the fan1 header on the motherboard in order to start...Let us know.

A similar thing happened to me when i built my first PC back in the heady days of 33mhz processors...........

After much hassling of the shop i purchased the mobo from, they agreed to look at my set-up. Imagine my embarassment when i realised what the plastic insulators under the motherboard were for... INSULATING...

went home, red faced, took them insulators out of the bag and put them in the computer... at last!! it worked.

---- I would never wish to imply anyone else could be this dumb, but just check EVERYTHING...... cables tight etc.....

Check the BIOS reset jumper. I have had this happen in the past, the jumper was set to 'short' and the board would do exactly as you describe. Some additional details would be helpful. Such as, motherboard model, memory size/type, CPU etc.
