Hey guys around last month i decided to rip all my dvds to a seperate computer. I ended up ripping all my dvds with DVDFAB and converting them to MKV with MAKEMKV (no compression).

So my setup is:
P4 3.0 HT/2gb/2x2TB/Gigabit Ethernet/Win7 Ultimate - Latest MatroskaSplitter, AC3 Filter, Xvid Codecs Installed
Dlink Gigabit Router
Hardwired PS3 streaming through MediaPlayer
Hardwired Xbox360 streaming through Media Center

I installed the programs/codecs above so there is no transcoding supposedly (?).

Finally finished up last night and noticed the PS3 runs perfectly, no audio problems or screen freezes. The 360 has a slight studder issue randomly and the audio has a crackling noise, sounds like the audio is too loud. Both running Dolby Digital through my Yamaha 5.1 amplifier with Optical audio out.

Is there anything im missing or just the 360 can't handle this format correctly?

Let me know, all suggestions appreciated in advance!

I'll bet your problem is through the media server. There's no reason that either box should choke on an Xvid file. Unless you've actually gone in and completely disabled the transcoder, it is most likely set to transcode automatically if it senses an incompatibility. I find it odd that they play at all, since Xbox 360 and PS3 don't support the .mkv file container.

Wow, the bitrate must be really, really high if you're not compressing at all... It could be a network issue, it could be the a server side transcoding issue.

Why not just rip the DVDs to ISO and use PS3 Media server?

im thinking its a server side transcoding issue. I already converted 353 dvds lol...i just noticed i didn't install divx 7 mkv support. Im going to try that when i get home.

It probably shouldn't make a difference since pretty much any modern Xvid codec pack would have that, wouldn't it? What is the container format (.avi, .mkv, .mp4, etc.) of the actual video files you are streaming? Did you maintain the multi-channel audio on all of these or downsample to 2-channel?

ok its definitly something between media center and the 360. The PS3 with PS3 Media Server streams perfectly with AC3 audio and last night i bought a WD TV Live, which also streams perfectly. With the old stock WD TV Live firmware i was getting the same issue i was with the 360 and after the firmware update it cleared up. All i need now is a cover downloader, anyone know the easiest way to do this?

He's just muxing the dvd into an mkv; The video would be mpg.

OP, you don't have to use DVDfab and the makeMKV, MakeMkv will decrypt the movie for you. You may have to grant it admin rights to use optical drives though.

Do your mkv files play on in windows (WMP)? Are you using the Divx 7 tech preview?

Gotcha, it sounded to me like he was converting to Xvid/DivX. I though that multi-channel AC3 wasn't supported in any format except .avi and only up to a maximum file size of 4GB. And I didn't think .mkv was supported at all. Have I misunderstood?

I think you're correct. From what I read, WMP 12 will transcode files to DLNA players. I think Divx is just publicizing this to promoting its h264 decoder.

OP, Since storage doesn't seem to be a problem you can enable dvd library support in WMC.
Homeservershow

Try converting a problem mkv file to a m2ts and see if that works.

5.1 channel ac3 is supported with Xvid/DivX. Has been since support for them was added to the 360 at the end of 2007.

1.What exactly does the Xbox 360 support for AVI? Xbox 360 supports the following for AVI:
·File Extensions: .avi, .divx
·Containers: AVI
·Video Profiles: MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple & Advanced Simple Profile
·Video Bitrate: 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280 x 720 at 30fps. See question number 11 for more information.
·Audio Profiles: Dolby® Digital 2 channel and 5.1 channel, MP3
·Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions. See question number 11 for more information.

I have a question regarding PS3 Media Server. I have it set up and it runs beautifully on the PS3 -- I can stream ISO files and playback is perfect. Has anyone tried this with the Xbox 360? I can get the ISOs to stream to the 360, but the video and sound are out of sync. I haven't had time to revisit the issue lately, but thought that maybe someone here had managed to solve it.
