It's a modest setup.

x2 3800
MSI K9N SLI Platinum
7900GTO
XMS2 1 GB DDR2

etc...etc...

I'm a complete newbie to PC gaming, any suggestions on a first game? I'm into pretty much all genres. Also, whats the average price range for a decent game?

3. Call of Duty 2
4. Oblivion

as for my fav. multiplayer games..

1. Counter -Strike: Source (comes bunded with hl2)
2. Battlefield 2142

there are tons more really...

Buy the Valve Complete Pack off Steam this will give you all of Half Life 1 + 2 and mods like Counterstrike 1 + Source and Day of Defeat etc. Great value for money the amount of mods you can get

I think the Valve Silver Pack is the best buy. You get Day of Defeat Source, Counterstrike Source, HL2..

otherwise my games installed right now are

Medieval 2 Total War , Half Life 2/Counterstrike Source, Oblivion, Heroes of Might and Magic 5 (soon the expansion as well), Civilization 4, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
And soon, Neverwinter Nights 2.

Neverwinter 2 and Medieval 2 just came out this past week.

I'd probably recommend for sure the Valve package. And try some demos of the games I listed above to see what you like. You will almost assuredly enjoy the Valve games, easily worth the $50-60.

Starcraft

Play these games in rotation. They will stave off the hunger until true DX10 games!

If, like me, you want to relax with a game after a stressful work day and aren't always in the mood for things chasing and killing you, try Civilization IV. It's addictive, though.

Many people that play Battlefield 2 also play Soldier of Fortune 2. To me sof2 is the best online fps out there. Your system will run it fine, there are tons of servers and there is a never ending supply of new maps coming out, even if the game is old. Sof2 double helix last time I was at target was 10.00! Single player version is not great. I almost did not even try the multiplayer because single is not so hot. I almost missed out!
enjoy!

Path of Neo :p

That game is actually really fun, and the way you can throw all of those Agent Smiths around and through pillars is really cool if you're a big Matrix fan.

Yeah, Starcraft is a very taxing game. So finally 9 years later he finally has a rig that can run it. :p

You gotta try Call of Duty 2! :)

It's my favorite game right now and it should run good on that system.

Surprized no one has mentioned: World of Warcraft

I have been a PC gamer since doom and a null modem cable

World of Warcraft is very deep and can ruin your regular life if you are not careful :)
