That's true of ALL of Crichton's books. He writes truly brilliant stuff for the first 3/4's of every book and then wusses out on the ending. They're all so wishy-washy and non-commital.

Yeah, but it was based on a true story. The ending had already been decided long before Crichton got his hands on it, so he couldn't screw it up. If it had been fiction and Crichton wrote the ending on his own he probably would have had the robbers change their minds and not go through with it, or he would have cut things off mid-robbery without letting the readers know if the caper succeeded.
