just finished building out the amd64 3200 combo (with ECS755A2 mb) I got from Frys on Friday...running with a gig of PC3200 corsair value memory...(was this combo worth $219?? - also, memory was $100 after a $40 rebate)

I was previously running a 2800 barton with a gig of pc2700 crucial memory on dfi ULTRA II board...

overall, the new rig doesn't 'seem' any faster (startup times, defrag times, etc) than the old one.

don't have any benchmarks on the old setup that I can compare...

when I went from a 2200 tbred to the 2800 barton, it was a pretty noticeable difference IMO...

should be there a noticeable difference between a 2800 barton and amd64 3200? Just wondering if it is worth keeping...

My two systems are similar to yours: XP2500 @ 2000 and A64 @ 2200. Honestly, both systems are more than adequate for almost everything a person would like to do. The A64 system is a little faster encoding video but it's not that big a deal since I just click go and walk away.

Just my opinion.

There may be a noticable difference in games and other high performance apps, but for things like defrag and startup, your HDD may be to blame. Are you using the same Hard drive as the old system?

yeah, your talking about mostly hard drive dependent apps. Load up half-life 2 or something and see how much more fps you get. Aquamark should probably show you how much more of an improvement your seeing too. Also, while you definitly saved money on the combo, the ecs board is quite slow compared to most other boards. Its not a terrible board, just at the lower rung.

using the same drives...2 maxtors 7200 rpm ATA133 8 meg cache (160 GB and 250 Gb) on the primary IDE channel and a Hitachi 200 GB ATA100 through a PCI ATA controller card...C: drive is partitioned at 30 GB...

just ran SIS Sandra on my C: drive and getting 20 MB/s...

an ATA100 WD with same specs should get 31 MB/s...

I have already updated the SIS755 drivers for the mother board and made sure I was running in UDMA6 mode on the primary IDE channel...something may not be right here...

the question is, would the uprgrade be worth it anyway? OP, can you return the stuff and buy a 6800GT. You seem to be concerned with gaming performance, and that will DEFINITELY make a big difference. Which vid card do you have now BTW?

have a Ge4 ti4200 128 mb 8x agp card...about 2 1/2 years old now IIRC...actually do more video encoding stuff than serious gaming right now...
