Wow. Nice job! Not to mention it was your first time from learning from a tutorial.

A LONG time. Don't know exactly because I'd just take it up when I was bored, a few hours here, a few hours there, but probably at least 20+ hours for both pieces. Rendering took a few hours at 1600x1200, and I had problems rendering @ higher resolutions (2560x1600, 1920x1200) because of an "out of memory" error. Dual-core could really come in handy now :(.

Nice work n00b! You can definately learn a lot from the video tutorials. I like your characters pose, but if you want it to look better you should light it better. The reflections on the car and chick show daylight, so you can put them in a daylight setting to make it look better (yeah i know.. just a render)

Your front bumper isnt reflecting and the fog lights? are not convincing. You're missing headlights too! You prolly know all this stuff but i like to nitpick when i critique work. ANyways... keep it up! If you have any questions pm me :D

Thanks for the critique, I really appreciate it. For the longest time I was wondering why the color on the front bumper looked off. You made me realize it was the reflections, DOH! The fog lights do look off, I agree, any ideas on that? What kind of lighting suggestions do you have for the character? Lastly, considering my n00b-ishness, how can I get my scene in an actual daylight setting?

The fog lights look like a bad texture map. looks like bad texture placement or no uv mapping. How did you make the foglights? You should post a wireframe so we can see what your mesh looks like too.

For the scene as a whole you should light it together... first make a little set for it to get your lights right. make a floor and a wall or two. then light the subjects then start adding textures to the props. You can add a cobblestone texture to the ground and then find an image of a house to plop into the background.. or you can just start modeling stuff... or just do it all in photoshop by adding your own background :D

Does lighting through these methods effect the HDRI lighting already going on?

EDIT: The actual Maya file is now on my server, so feel free to take a look. http://www.callmedtop.com/car_finish.mb

It is a 30+MB file, so be warned.

you kind of need a background to illuminate the subjects if you're using Global illumination and final gather. if you wanna light with GI then you may not need any lights. eitherway build a background for your scene so you can diagnose the lighting better.

ill take a look at your file but i got a lot of my own maya work to do ATM :D
