Hey everyone, thought I'd share this here.

I've just completed a 3D model of my phone which is a Samsung Exclaim. There was lots of detail so it took me a few weeks of my free time to make it!

Pretty cool. What program did you use to make this? Was it for a class project?

Damn. Pretty nice. What did you use to make it?

this

I wanted to flame the OP for having an Exclaim..but that model looks sweet as hell.

Teach me please? Or can you do one of a Vibrant? I could possibly pay...

Maya 2011, rendered in Mental Ray. It was just a project for fun and to see how realistic I could make it.

If you want I can do one of the Vibrant. What are you going to use it for? and how much would you be willing to pay for something like that? I haven't started freelancing yet, but my goal is to get there one day. And to learn something like this you would want to set aside years of learning time. I've been doing 3D pretty heavily for the last 2 years, and I've been dabbling in it for over 5 years easily. I've got my bachelor's in 3D modeling and animation.

i liked maya, but i still prefer lightwave for modeling. you should apply a bump to the key lines, arent they indented slightly?

Bump to the key lines? Are you referring to the F and the J key? That's actually modeled in, not a bump map.

I take regular screenshots for bragging rights. I'd like a fancy front view of a Vibrant to paste it onto.

So instead of just this:

I could post a Vibrant with that image on its screen.

Not sure how much something like that would be worth???

It just occurred to me that damn near every cell phone ever made probably has a 3D model of it on some engineers hard drive.

I'm not sure either. I know that models of phones go on turbosquid (turbosquid is a model store for 3D work) for around $100-200. It takes a lot of time to get all the detail in there. I did check the Samsung Vibrant out and it seems simple compared to my phone though, because my phone has two keyboards/pads which is a lot of detail to include.

Maybe we could arrange something, what's the max you'd be willing to spend on it? I would probably just need you to take pictures for me with your phone next to a ruler so I can get accurate measurements.

You're right. That's what they use in commercials, etc...

In fact, that was kinda my reasoning for creating it, because I want to sell my models.

Pretty cool. How do you get things like the Sprint logo in there? I don't suppose you just draw them?

talking about the third image, portrait slid open. the razr-like keys look like an image dump map, no texture at all. i thought those kinds of keyboards had the blue areas inset.

What the hell does that smiley face button do?

It's a shortcut to pull up smiley faces while texting!

Pretty cool. How do you get things like the Sprint logo in there? I don't suppose you just draw them?

I modeled them in and set them on top of the black part. Basically you take a top-down look and slap an image on the camera, then you model over the image. After modeling the sprint logo, you get to scale and place it properly.

talking about the third image, portrait slid open. the razr-like keys look like an image dump map, no texture at all. i thought those kinds of keyboards had the blue areas inset.

On my phone those blue areas are actually not inset, but they are protruding from the black surface. I will fix this in the next version of renders.

It takes weeks to do a 3D model of a phone?? Wow not worth the effort. But it looks so crisp and realistic I thought it was an actual pic, good job.
