Just downgraded to a Ti4800 from a R9800 Pro!!!

Well, I finally got fed up waiting for Half Life 2 (the primary reason I got the Radeon 9800). It's been fun toying with the best of the best, but I decided to sell the R9800 while I can still get some good money for it. The other reason was that AA and AF don't quite blow my skirt up like many other people. Ok, AF is pretty nice, but I think AA is overrated, particularly 1024x768 and above...

I figure with the money I got for my R9800 I should be able to buy an R420 card when they come out (or at least that should cover most of it). I bought the 4800 for a great price on FS/FT and I'm pretty satisfied with it's performance.

The dropoff has been a bit bigger than I thought, ie 19k 3dmarks to 14K 3dmarks but it still plays the games I'm playing right now fine: Max Payne 2 and Halo.

Another reason I decided to downgrade is that I just picked up a Gamecube, so I figure that plus my PS2 should be able to tide me over until I really need to upgrade my video card next March/April for HL2.

hehe. I think AF overrated while AA = can't live without it.

I dropped down from a highly overclocked R9600 Pro to a 4800SE @ 4800 speeds. It came with VIVO which I needed badly and the gaming performance is great for now.

Yeah, Valve found a way to fool ppl and collect money months (or is it years ?) before actual game is delivered.

I see XGI ad flickering on top of this page, it should be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever coupon.

Wait, DNF coupon have been bundled with TNT2 already ! Hehe.

I always use at least 2xAA and always 16xAF. The IQ has nothing to do with the normal rendering. I can't live without them.

LOL...at first it seems funny, but i copmpletely see your point about AA above certain resolutions. and if the Ti4800 can produce a framerate you can live with, while maintaining decent IQ, then why not? besides, you're only saving for a better card in the end. it was a bold move, but good for you...i probably couldn't convince myself to do the same🙂.

Cant really blame them since the source leaked, I rather wait a few (or more if must be) extra months so that when the game comes out it will be hardder to cheat, less bugs and more finished.

Yeah, it was tough parting with my card (especially since it was such a great o/cer) but the GF4 is still a solid card IMO. Just no DX9.

I don't know - I've read various theories that Valve really wasn't as far along as they claimed to be and that the leaked "beta/alpha" is proof that they weren't close to hitting the Sept 30 release. Regardless, HL2's new launch date is April of next year, so that gives us all a lengthy wait until then!

16x AF is probably what I'll miss the most. It makes a huge difference in lots of games.

🙂 .... jiffylube1024 maybe you should of got yourself a copy of BF1942 and download the mod Desert Combat

Never been a big fan of BF1942. As a matter of fact, the only multiplayer games I really enjoyed were Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 (back in the day) and UT 2k3 to a much lesser extent. I'm more of a single player guy.

Well, if you're a single player guy and like fantasy to any extent, you simply must delve into Neverwinter Nights.

Awesome. Purely awesome.

I downgraded from 9800 pro to 9100. Really hasn't effected me much as 9100 still plays every game I throw at it fine. If it isn't broken, why fix it?

I agree with you on the AA. I don't think AA contributes that much to IQ. I think AF is a bit more valuable.

How on earth can....

AF is barely visible unless you really squit for it, but jaggies....jaggies are everywhere. AA > AF 😛

Well, I don't want to divulge too much, but I got good deals on them. I got the Ti4800 for $108 shipped, and let's say I made over $150 on the difference.

I made a similar switch 3 or 4 months ago from a 9700 Pro to a Ti4600. Everyone thought I was crazy, but quite frankly I don't see any new games since then that have slowed my GF4 collection down. I picked up a Gainward Ti4800 for $85 that runs 332/684. I also said that at 1600 x 1200 AA was hardly noticible and AF wasn't a big deal at high resolutions. I guess opinions change, but it is nice to see people agreeing this time.

Well I definately notice a difference (however it's not night-and-day as some people proclaim it to be). That's a crazy price for a Ti4800 - you got quite a deal.

I agree that at 1600X1200 AA is hardly noticable, but can you really play that many games at that resolution with high framerates? I like to keep it over 60 (fps) as much as possible, which makes 1024X and 1280X my ideal framerates.

AF is more noticeable in some games than others. In UT 2k3 I don't think it makes that much of a difference. In Halo, it is night and day IMO.

It makes a huge difference in Unreal II as well.... I love the open areas of this game 🙂

I get a 125fps+ average in Unreal Tournament, my flyby/botmatch scores in UT2003 are 100/60. UT2003 is the only game that has actually challenged the GF4 for me, 1280 x 1024 or 1280 x 960 keeps the framerates high.

Bingo. UT2k3/U2 are the only ones that give my GF4 any kind of workout - the new Unreal Tech.

BF1942, Neverwinter Nights, Warcraft 3....all respectably meaty 3d Apps - don't even make it blink. Definitely the best DX8 card you can get 🙂

Hell, I plan to play many DX9 games (HL2 among them) on this card - it's not going anywhere for at least another year. Got tons of juice left.

On my GF4 I could run every game I play 1600X1200. With my FX5900 I can do it but with AA + AF turned on 🙂
