I know I did miserable on the S.A.T. Most of the stuff I didn't even get through reading all the answers. Some stuff didn't even make sense. What a waste of time. Lots of words I didn't know. I don't know if its lack of knowledge (LAUSD, probally) or just useless knowledge I never cared to learn.

Don't worry. I highly recommend going to SAT School(Princeton Review). One of the more tedious homework assignments deal with learning new words. Also, buy a ton a magazines and start reading them. I wholeheartedly believe that my vocabulary is as good as it is, because of the fact I've been a subscriber to Car and Driver since the 5th grade. Holy Crud...November 1993...sigh:)

Playboy has interesting articles too;)

heh I just took them today as well. One of the math sections seemed a bit too hard than it should have.

AND I HATE THOSE STUPID ALGEBRA QUESTIONS WHERE THEY MAKE THE WHOLE DAMN THING UP!!!!!!!!!! AHHHH!!!

You know, like 2x - 3 = y - 1 is equivanent to 3x (x) 4y - 6, with the (x) being in a circle. I can't stand them, they make no damn sense. I think I only figured out one of them in the whole test.

Well screw the SAT's, 1510, 4.35 UC weighted GPA and lots of extracarricular crap wasn't good enough to get me into UCLA CS or Berk EECS. Lots of super ppl at my school who are really outstanding, 7 ppl got into EECS, these same ppl got into UCLA and aren't going. I should have applied letters of arts and sciences at berk, competition is too tough. I'll be appealing UCLA tho.

Sorry about the rough time with the test. You can always take it again, and there are prep courses you can check into and books to help you prepare.

mpg, don't worry about it. If you think you did that poorly, just get a good review book, get cracking and take it again in may. :) I'm probably going to study some this summer, take em in the fall, see how I do, then take them again in the spring.

LOL, my friend got a 1510 the first time...then took them again. He got an f'ing 1590 the second time! :Q

Oh yea.. those problems with the weird symbols for math I didn't even bother doing cause I don't even know what the hell they stand for.

on A (insert wierd ass sysmboy here) B = B/2 +a/b
solve for 2 (symboly) 9

you would just substite 2 for A and 9 for B and do the math.

There was one circle problem in the math that I couldn't do.
There were two circles that over laped with a radius of 4in. the distance across the over lap was 2 in and there was a line drawn down the middle of the cross over which made a right angle with the 2 in line. The question wanted to know how long the line was went down the center of the circles did anyone get answer to that question?

Kru,

They obviously measure something, because people good in math and english generally do better than those that are bad in math or english.

Mpg,

A lot of it depends how far you have gotten in regular high school math. Trig and Pre-Calc definitely helped me on the algebra and triangle geometry sections. Also, I read through Peterson's SAT Success book . That helped me just knowing what the equations would be that they tested on. I know that it helped me get at least 3 math problems right I wouldn't have gotten without the book.

Try taking the ACT as well. Some people who don't do well on the SAT do pretty well on the ACT, and most colleges will accept ACT's in place of SAT's.

<< standardized tests measure nothing >>

Smart people do well on them, less smart people don't do as well.

So they do measure SOMETHING.

recneps - yeah I remember that triangle one. I thought I had the answer and went all crazy because I thought I got it, and then my answer came out to 5.1 or something, which wasn't a choice :)

(basically if I remember correctly you had to figure out the lengths of the legs and use pythagoreams theroum(sp?) )

I took it today also, i thought it was much harder than the PSAT, perhaps because it wears you down more. The math was about the same, I thought, but the verbal I just couldn't wait to end. A lot of questions i was chosing between two answers, wasn't really sure which one was better. I hope my luck was with me today. Oh well I guess I can always take it again.

I got a 1350 on my SAT's, and my school gave me the "bag over the head, punch in the face" scholarship. :frown:

ugh, and PSAT, I got a 206 when the semifinalist cut off point was 207...boy was I pissed.

GoldenBear - It's not very accurate though. My friend was 4th in our class at the time we took our SATs, he only scored a 980. He's bad at word problems and multiple choice when it comes to tests. But he's extremely smart and discliplined - I think that's what he was trying to get at when he said "they measure nothing". In some cases they don't.

I think I did pretty well, actually. I took them today as well. I breezed through the math section, the reading section, and the analogies. I had some trouble with the part where you had to complete the sentence, cause I didn't know half the words. Only ommited like 6 problems I think. I'm shooting for over a 1300.

It's not necessarily about that stuff. It's about vocabulary, reading comprehension, and math solving skills. Your friend may have the ability to study and work on projects and all, but it is a different measure here.

Some people who get bad grades in school do very well on the SATs. Some people who get bad grades in school do bad on the SATs and the same the otehr way around. The SATs only measure how good you are at taking the SATs.
In school I am good in math and I did good on the math part (790). But I also get good grades in my english classes and on the verbal part I didn't do good (490). Today many colleges are saying that SAT scores are not the number one thing they look at, some good schools don't even ask for them (like Bowdoin College).
If you do good in school and bad on the SATs you will probably get into a good college without a problem.
