Part of it is the marriage penalty, part is because we don't qualify for Earned Income Credit. :|

Sucks.

You do, but you have two choices: married filing separately, or married filing jointly.

Advantages of one over the other?

I've actually used this in a pickup line..walk up to a hot chick and say..."how would you like to get married for tax purposes....we could save a bundle by filing jointly"....

Yeah, we'll get back 3100 filing joint. BUT if we file as if we weren't married, we'd get 5700!!! :|

Of course, that would be illegal, and I would NEVER recommend that!

I don't know of any advantages of filing seperately. Every year I've done my wife and I's taxes, we've come out better filing jointly.

Ummm....

Getting married has cost me $2500 in taxes this year. What's the benefit again of being married? Besides regular sex that is?

I just went back and reread what you wrote. I believe you can file married filing seperately even if you are married. I'd check in to that if I were you. That's what the option if there for. Just because you are married doesn't mean you have to file jointly.

But there's no financial benefit. To get EIC, you have to file Head of Household, and can't do that if you're married.

okay, I see what you're saying. Once again, I misread it. File as if you weren't married I misread this as filing married filing seperately.

I think it's because if you were single, your personal exemption is $7500 which would be $15k between the two of you. Married, your personal exemptioin is only $9500 together.

Umm...pretty sure that's tax fraud. A felony, from what I remember.
