i just overclocked my Celeron 566, right out of the box up to 700 but changing the settings in my bios to 83 Mhz and 8.5. When i boot up, it now says that my processor is running at 700Mhz. My question is, does it mean that since it says its running at 700 at bootup, it actualy is, since i didnt change any settings on my motherboard, i just changed bios settings to overclock. another question is: how hot can a celeron run? mine right now is at about 30, is that too high? whats a critical temperature that i should exceed?

please help!!!

thanks

Cooling is a must with overclocking.
You can check your actual speed with a program called CpuZ
Here's were you can read about it and download it. Link

thanks for the tip, but i already know my systems temperature because my bios provides me with that info. i just need to know what are safe temeprature ranges for my Celeron 566? How hot can i run it?? and if i should overclock more?

My 566 is running 850 with default HSF and 1.65 volt.

Don't worry about the heat, it it gets to hot it will "just" crash, not blow up.

Its a lot more stable at 100mz fsb for the peripherals and heat shouldn't be an issue if you have a hs & fan mounted properly. Many temp monitoring programs are giving very different readings for the same sensors. I wouldn't believe the temps unless you can confirm with another program or by touch. OUCH!! is hot.

PCVAS,
If the temperatures you gave are both Celsius, they do seem a bit high...or at least the CPU temp seems high. It shouldn't be too hard hard to get the CPU temps down to 35-40C. What heatsink are you using and did you apply thermal paste to the CPU slug.

Also, if you try the CPU at 100 FSB, be sure to change the PCI divider to 1/3 and the AGP divider to 2/3....this is assuming that you're using a BX board...if you're not, let us know what board you're using.

yes , if your bios is reporting 700 mhz , thats where you are at. what mobo and HSF are you using?

my heatsink and fan combo came from radioshack, so they are nothin special. yeah, the temperatures are in celcius and i got them from my bios. as of right now i'm satisfied with celly at 700, but when i'm gonna be thinkin of farther overclockin i probably should get a more serious fan. i'm using FIC FA13 mobo.

I forget what the upper range is that Intel recommends but I believe you are very close to the upper temperature limits. I would seriously recommend spending some more time and learning more about cooling. I would recommend thinking about a new heatsink now...also, are you using thermal paste on the CPU slug...if not, this could cuase the temps to be rather high.
