Ok I just did a windows XP about a month ago and while XP is running agian to how I want it to, I just realized I forgot to install windows 98 first than XP. The reason why I wanted to install windows 98 is because I have a few applications that ONLY run on windows 98 which happen to be games and since this is a gaming machine, I want to be able to play those games as well. Normally when wanting to do a dual boot with out 3rd party software, I would install windows 98 then XP and tell XP not to upgrade windows 98.

Now that everyone knows my situtation, I'm now wondering if it's possible to some how install 98 (maybe move XP files first then move em back agian?) and some how have windows XP be ok with the fact that windows 98 is there. One idea I had was to move all the files, install windows 98,copy the files back and then edit the boot.ini file so that it sees both operating systems..

Just curious, which games are those that won't run under XP with 98 emulation turned on?

The need for speed series seems to be a b!tch on windows XP. I've tried hundreds of patches trying to get NFS4 to run on windows XP but to no avail. There are a few more legacy games that I can't think of a the moment that refuse to run on windows XP. I don't mind running windows 98SE anyways because it can be useful when an application I download doesn't work (is it just not working in XP or is it corrupt?)

I think I have seen 2 applications not run in XP using compatibility. Perhaps it's time to ditch the old school games? The one game was some sort of Viking game, can't think of the name of it....

the best option to fix this would be to add a smaller, second drive for 98, there is no way to do this on one drive without repartitioning and lots of hoops. Put a 10 gig drive in there and install 98(change boot order in bios till it's finsihed) then add an entry to XP's boot.ini

Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 (no game boot after install)
Revenant (no sound)
And a ton of others...

Keep in mind, that Windows 98 connected to a network (with or without Internet access) has tons of security loop holes. So don't be suprized if your system starts cramping up.

Never abandon classic games. Never. Otherwise chess, marbles, mario1, and pingpong ball wouldn't exist tomorrow. *bows*

I would grab a copy of VMWare and throw Windows 98 and my games on there.

actually, I've been amazed that the last few times I've installed win98 after XP
there where no problems, no need to do anything after or before
XP boot menu was still there but even if it were not it's not that hard to fix if you have your XP CD to get to command prompt recovery console.

the only thing is that you have a fat32 boot partition

I heard that windows 98 has to be on the first partition before the 2GB barrier and needs to be the primary boot drive unlike XP which couldn't care less...

Most older 16 bit games, will run perfect under an emulated system. The best can still be run under 2k, or dosbox as well.

There are a good amount of emulation options to try before you go screwing around with another install, of Win98 no less.
