Update 05/08 ...

They're back! We heard some more noises today, and I opened the closet door and saw a squirrel in the closet again. I don't want to deal with this situation so up close and personal, so am now getting prices for removal. I took a walk around to the side of the apartment building, and there is a vent about 25-30 feet up in the air. Looking into the vent I could see one of the squirrels staring right back at me, so that's definitely their point of entry. I now have a couple of questions..

1) Are there any specific laws in the City of Chicago that says who is responsible for paying for this removal? One of the guys I talked to while pricing around said that they are the same as a cockroach, and the landlord is responsible for payment.

2) Should I be concerned with them somehow chewing through the drywall and getting into my living space? I ask because most of the removal places wont come out until Monday.

Original Post 05/06..

I started hearing noises around noon. I was sitting in my bedroom on the computer and heard some strange sounds coming from the hallway. When I walked out there the noises would stop, and this carried on for a couple of hours. Around 5pm, I noticed my cat sitting in front of the utility closet in the hallway. He was meowing and staring under the door. This pretty much confirmed that there was something in there. I had to wait until 6pm when my roommate got home before I opened the closet.

I put on some leather gloves and tucked my sweatshirt into them. We also grabbed a garbage can, a Coors lite box as a topper for the can, and a couple of broomsticks. We slowly opened the door with the can in front and took a look. Behind the furnace we could see a squirrel staring at us, so we stuck the can on the ground to try to work it in. This closet is very small, so there weren't many places to go. After poking at it from different directions he finally ran into the can, and I slammed the box on top to take him outside. I got him down the stairs and released into the backyard feeling accomplished with what we had just done. My roomate and I walk upstairs to open a beer, and he goes over to close the closet door.

As soon as he starts closing the door, he yells down the hallway to me "There's another squirrel in here!" We had left the door open, and didn't even notice a second squirrel in there after we captured the first one. Here we go again. I put my gloves back on and got back into position with the can. The second one was definitely more frisky, and took some more prodding to get into the can, but eventually he ran in and I brought him outside. What an ordeal, my heart is still pumping. I have never had to deal with any stray animals coming in from outside into my apartment. I live in a big city on the 2nd floor so it's a rare occurence for sure.

Cliffs:
1) Heard noises in closet during the day.
2) Cat sat meowing in front of closet, and more scratching confirmed animals in there.
3) Found squirrel in closet, coaxed him into a garbage can and released him.
4) Went back upstairs and found second squirrel in closet, got him in the can and outside as well.
5) Cheers!

Should have shot them with a BB gun while your roommate prepared some breading and warmed up the stove.

They will eat the shit out of your wiring. You are going to have to take them out.

Offer them up a live wire. They will be dispatched quickly. I bet they stink when they fry though.

Just buy a live trap, or some heavy leather gloves, and catch them. If you weren't so scared of small furry animals, I'd suggest trying to tame them, and keep them as pets.

Yeah, it's looking like we're going to have to do another capture. One of the squirrels is in there crawling on the furnace / water heater trying to get to a pipe at the ceiling. I can see the other one in the pipe looking down. My roommate is getting back shortly, and we will seal the pipe once the deed is done. Will be back with (hopefully) good info.

If you can get to the vent(extension ladder?); put some screening over the opening so they don't get in again.

Capture them and kill them. Hurry or there will be a new crop of mini-squirrels living in your house soon.

you released the squirrel in your backyard? what are you, stupid? how far does the squirrel have to go before he can get back into the vent again, like 50 feet?

capture him again, then drive like five or ten miles away, then release it.

When we captured the first squirrel, we thought he was the only one. As far as our "trap" it was a garbage can and a coors lite box. There was no good way to get them far away.

As far as where they are getting in, the vent is 25-30 feet in the air. If we can seal it on the inside for now, come Monday we will be able to get an extension ladder that can reach. All that would be left to do is drive them out from the inside, and plug the hole out there.

You could make it like a potato gun, and launch them out of the vent :^D

The landlord is responsible for paying since it's their property.

What they'll have to do is find the hole they're coming in and patch it up with some chicken wire. That will stop them.

Ok, got back and things went pretty smoothly. Thankfully the squirrel figured out how to get back into the pipe at the ceiling. We looked around and didn't see / hear him in the closet so we think he's gone. My roommate screwed some mesh over the pipe to prevent them from coming into the closet at least. We are going to have to call someone out early next week to make sure they are out of the pipe and plug the hole from the outside.

You could have just used a rattrap and put some peanut butter on it, I bet they'd go for it.
