Just delivered my two-week notice

I'm not sure if I worded it correctly. The place I'm working at has some financial problems, and last week they attempted to do something without my permission that I felt crossed the line (advertising my picture in a paper as practicing in an area I have no experience in). I decided not to mention that but rather focus on the financial problems:

My notice:

After our discussions last week, I have decided that it may be in the best interest for both the firm and myself to seek other employment. I have enjoyed working here with everyone and wish I could continue; however, I understand the current circumstances and that it may not be financially feasible for the firm at this time to keep me employed. In the meantime while I search for other employment, I would be more than happy to continue with the firm on a part-time or contract basis. If, depending on the severity of the situation, that is not possible, then I believe it would be best to give my notice now, with the standard two weeks to wrap up loose ends and ensure a smooth transition.

I want to thank you again for giving me the opportunity to work here and gain valuable experience in the law practice, and wish you both success.

Sincerely,

[name]

I don't want to burn any bridges right now because this was my first real job and I'll need the reference.

how come you didn't send it out friday? (send out friday, leave on a friday; send out monday, you have to come in for monday on your last day. unless "2 weeks" meaning just short of two weeks.)

So you quite before securing another job?

Not a good idea IMO.

QFT.

BTW, does anyone know where the '2 weeks' came from? I guess I've always wondered this and never thought to ask if there is some history behind it.

I always just thought it was common courtesy given to the employer to allow them time to find a replacement for the position that was just vacated.

I think it's way too wordy.

Honestly, the best two week notice is just that - a notice that you are ending your employment after two weeks. It should be 1, 2, maybe 3 full sentences at most.

Any other items you or they want to discuss can be discussed in person.
