I am such a loser....

My sys admin disabled backups last week because of sobig. As a result, I will likely lose 6 days of work :(

They have this wonderful concept of source control, and cvs works nicely on Unix boxen so you can rm -rf your local tree all you want.

We use cvs, but these were new files that hadn't been added to the source tree yet. We only commit changes here that have passed unit test. That way we don't kill other developers.

So you worked 6 days without ever thinking to use file copy or tar/zip/gzip to back up your work?

Sorry, but I have to agree.

We have a backup schedule here and the IT department decided not to carry through with it last week because of the virus we got hit with,

but thanks for being an ass...

Sure. Why don't I duplicate and second guess everyone's work. I was told we had a backup schedule.

In this type of situation I've actually maintained my own CVS tree and replicated it to the "production" CVS tree in the evening via a cron job. As a developer who is often out of town consulting I can't count on admins to backup things for me.

Anyway, you should really consider some fault tolerance of your own.

Oh, and I'm certain that if someone were to do this on a Windows box it would be Microsoft's fault. This is evident by all the annoying "Are you sure?" dialogs in almost every aspect of Windows these days. "Are you sure you want to change your network settings? If you're a moron, you might open your box to the world."

Not that I can use. I'm often offline with a client where some form of source control needs to be maintained, so that's how I decided to do it. I usually just replicate once I return to my hotel. I know other consultants who just back everything up, but trying to recall the source from a client before a regression test failure would be a horrible pain, imo.

I'm open to other suggestions if you have any. I've been considering dumping CVS in favor of something like SourceGear's Vault, but I'm not certain yet.
