Damnit!!!!

This is a classic case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." My comp was working great before, but a friend lent me a tube of Artic Silver 3, so I figured I'd take off my HSF and appy some AS3 to get my temps down and maybe do some overclocking.

During the process I unknowingly installed the HSF on an angle and had to kind of "wresle" the clips onto the socket lugs.

When I tried to turn on my comp, the system turned on, but there was no activity, and my motherboard diagnostic LEDs indicate a problematic CPU.

Man this sucks! I won't be able to use my comp for a week, while I order a new CPU (I'm thinking about a thoroughbred 2400+ 266 FSB - the fastest that will work with my SDRAM motherboard).

fried my mobo doing the exact same thing ..... it sucks ..... it was a Tbird 1400 ....ended up going to Barton 2500+ .... new MOBO and ram of course

Also, how do I know for sure that my CPU is the problem and not the motherboard, or both?

I know my diagnostics reported that it was a CPU failure, but I don't know much I can trust it. Since the system powered on (but didn't do anything else), could this be caused by a motherboard problem also?

You said you cracked your CPU. Do you mean that literally? Does it appear to be physically broken? Or was that just a guess, because if it's a guess, check to see if the heatsink is on backwards.

hehe last time i bought some artic silver and decided to redo my thermal compound.. i spilled alochol all over the mobo but luckily i dried it up and it started working again.. whew

I cracked my athlon thunderbird 1.2GHz when I scraped some of the dried thermal compound off with a screw driver. Sad... but I learned my lession.

It was just a guess... Yes, the heatsink was oriented correctly 😉 I actually took the HSF off later to see if it was litteraly cracked/broken but I didn't see anything (then again, I didn't look real hard). So I guess I was assuming that the core was somehow cracked/b0rked.
