alright, just configured my linksys routers and got internet working, now i need to know how to secure it. i was informed first to apply WPA. what exactly is WPA?

the router automatically creates a password, isn't that already safe? without this password others people won't be able to log into my network.

also, where do you shorten the wireless signal? i couldn't find the option in the router 192.168.1.1 webpage.

also, when i connect my laptop wirelessly the lights on the 1-4 ports didnt' light up, it would have been very helpful if it lights up so i can see intruder stealing my signal

1) Linksys & WPA

2) The password that you are referring to sounds like a router login password. That is only for logging in to the router to make adjustments. Without some tye of encryption or mac filtering then you will have an unsecure network accessible by anyone that wishes to hop on your ssid.

3) I think the only way to adjust the wifi signal/power levels is to use an aftermarket firmware.

4) The 4 ethernet lights will be illuminated when you have a wired client connected to port 1-4 (the built in switch) on the back of the router.

what's ssid?

no, i'm not referring to logging into my router's password, i'm referring to the password that the router have already created when i first configured it, i think it's the WPA password, i think that's what it is. so WPA is just a wireless log in password eh? i though it's more than that.

that's what i thought. why isn't wireless light up when someone connects to it?
why just ethernet?

and what exactly is cisco system one button sercuity thing on the router?

This the SSID's description, http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless/g/bldef_ssid.htm

Some people things that by keeping it Off adds security.

This is my position on it, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ssid

The Light is Solid On to indicate that the Wireless Capacity of the Router is On. When someone is actually using it should Blink.

Unlike Wire, Wireless does not maintain a connection without actually transmitting some thing, so if it does not blink no one is connected.

what's access point? is it reffering to the wireless router?

and what about the easy sercure button i mention above?
