Just checking to see if my PSU is DOA

I just got my new Enermax 465AX from Newegg yesterday. Since I haven't recieved my case yet I decided to plug it in to see if it worked.
The fans didn't do anything but I heard a click when I turned off the switch, just like you would with a power strip. So can I assume my PSU is ok and that the fans need to be hooked up to the mb in order to work, or is it dead?

The powersupply needs to be under a load - you need to connect a hard drive or something that will draw sufficient power - a few fans may work, one probably won't.

You also need to simulate the motherboard on/off signal by shorting the green wire in the ATX power connector with any of the black ones - use a piece of wire or a paperclip. As long as you are shorting the green and one of the blacks, you won't get shocked or anything.

I don't think the good quality ones need to be under a load for it to turn on. I just tested my lite-on from directron just by shorting the pins.

Why don't you just wait a day or two for your other stuff to arrive?

Because the way I do my upgrades is somewhat wierd. I hate maxing out my credit cards, so I buy a few components per month till I have everything I want and then build away. Ok I know the next question, "So why don't you save the money you need and buy everything at once?". Well...more often than not something happens that eats my upgrade money. Plus I'm not even sure about what chip/mobo I'm going for. Probably P4 Canterwood, but I won't make that purchase till July or August.

Which will give me plenty of time to fiddle with my new LL case.

My fiance is going to get my old setup, so I'm tweaking some things on it as well. 🙂
