I've been trying to repair my brother's HP a230n. Makin' a long story short, I've shot it down to the mobo and/or cpu. A new mobo's coming in tomorrow, so I'm getting ready for it.

As it stands right now I've got the system down to mobo (a7n8x-la) w/onboard graphics, psu (good), one stick of proven ram, and monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers. It was a working system, so I havn't bothered to remove the mobo from the case.

On power up I'm not getting a post, just a request to "select proper boot device or insert boot media. Indication of a bad mobo (or cpu). Right?

I just foolin' w/it right now, getting ready to pull the cpu, and maybe try reseating it. Just getting ready for the new mobo. Anybody know any other reason for a no post?

BTW, things I've tried getting to the bad mobo/cpu: r&r hdd w/new, new oem os, different ram, r & r psu w/new. Just trying to get it to the point that I can reverse and start putting it back w/as many existing parts as possible.

Pretty sure he didn't flash the bios. The thing just started restarting w/no boot. He had the same prob. about a year and a half ago and HP replaced the hdd under warranty. So I figured he lost another hdd. He couldn't load the HP recovery disk (this was a burned copy of his original).

Replaced the hdd to no avail. Then I found out HP has a hidden boot file on their hdd, that can be erased if you do a FDISK. Thought he might have done this, so I got an oem copy of xp and tried to load that. It tried to load, but came up w/missing files and a NTLDR error (this is loading the new os on the new and old hdds).

The voltages on the power supply check out ok, but I swapped in a new FSP unit I had laying around. No changes.

That's how I got to the mobo/cpu. and no post.
