Just Cause 2

Anybody else excited for the demo today? I've been waiting to play it to see if I'm ordering Heavy Rain or this (monetary voucher reasons, I want Heavy Rain now though). The demo is supposed to show off a big section of the very large area they claim to have, so I'm hoping it is good enough to show off the core aspects of the game.

I'm excited to give it a shot. I never played the first one, but I'm hearing good "first impressions" about this one.

It's supposed to be 35 square miles. But I saw a screen shot with the main character on top of a jet. How can you be on a plane when there is only 35 square miles? At 600 miles per hour it would take 3 minutes to cross that area.

first one had a great world but the gameplay was very meh. it was way more fun to just screw around in it than to do the actual missions. ai was awful in it.

but man was it a HHUUGGEE game, by far the biggest open world game.

part 2 looks to be better, i'm definitely going to check this out.

Well,

The demo will serve up 35-square miles of the full version's 400-square mile playable area.

I'm not worried about it too much, we'll probably just hit an invisible wall or something. Besides, it's a videogame- it might be 200MPH, who knows? And it will take 40 minutes in the full version, which is a helluva long time.

The first one got tedious after a while, but for some reason I couldn't put it down. I'll be picking this one up at launch.

For whatever reason, I never played the first one (I guess it was never really on my radar). Having read (and seen) the buzz surrounding this game, I'm definitely excited about the demo, and will be trying it out tonight.

My question is, would it be worthwhile to pick up the first one, or just wait for this release?

Never played the first but the enthusiast press has been hyping this one. I think it was 4 guys 1 up that was saying it is kind of like crackdown and redfaction Guerilla and seems to be much better than the first.

I am excited to play the demo tonight. From all of the footage I've seen it looks ridiculously fun.

Err... 400 square miles != a 400 mile square. If it's square it'd be 20x20 miles, so 2 minutes to cross at 600 mph. To be honest, traveling from place to place was one of the biggest annoyances in the first game. Once you unlock some helicopters you can fly from place to play, but you still have to get to the helipad to pick up your helicopter.

I really enjoyed the first one, but it was a bit too repetitive. I think if they improve on the first one it could be a really good game.

Just watched this video at IGN

The gameplay looks to be there, if they can round out the missions better than the first one, this is going to be crazy good.

Edit: On the whole plane thing, planes are slowed down in this game. Obviously a jet flying at full speed will cover the island in no time. For gameplay reasons planes, even jets, travel more like 100mph.

thanks for the vid

Never played the first but this looks like it could be fun.

Played through the demo once. Seems like it'd be a good game. Vehicle handling is pretty squirrely, but it seems like you upgrade to make driving better. Wish the demo time was longer though 🙁

I meant go around the real level (maybe..it was morning after all). Either way it's a big area to explore.

Vehicle handling is AWFUL, the voice acting was worse, and ammo seems a little hard to come by. On the other hand, everything else was pretty excellent, so I'll be paying attention to the reviews. The mission, in particular, was a lot of fun.

I thought the driving was pretty good. Maybe it's the difference between keyboard and controller because I played it on pc. If anyone is interested in my opinion (not likely haha) I posted it in the pc gaming thread.

The original was using the GTA 3 engine right? This new iteration looks good, character model looks good, game is very colorful, terrain looks great, cool fire and explosions, but I don't think it is using GTA 4 engine and it doesn't look quite as good as GTA 4 or as good as Far Cry 2.

it is an improvement over the first, the sounds are real good but no way would I pay 60 for it. If it had online multiplayer or co-op I would have

tried the demo out last night...

great concept, poor execution. the controls in this game and the AI are just all over the place - just like the first one.

with that said, it was still a lot of fun to just mess around in. my favorite thing I did was shoot one of the 849032984032 helium (or whatever they are) canisters pointing upwards, and hooking onto it RIGHT before it flew off the ground, and then it takes you really high into the sky and you can parachute from way up there.

i also found some really fast car that was kind of hidden.

i really want to like this game but i just don't think i can do more than just screwing around in it.

Man I thought this game was awesome. I had SO much fun with it last night.

To me it's a great mashup of Crackdown, Mercs, and the original title (which wasnt really that good but I had fun with it anyway.)

The grapple hook and parachute are rad.

In the beginning of the demo you're essentially surrounded by explosive cannisters. I decided to shoot on and then grapple on to it before it took off up into the air and I rode it like a rocket--it was awesome! Once it peaked it exploded and sent me spinning until I pulled out the parachute.

Man, loving this game! I cant remember the last time I actually went back and replayed a demo! 🙂

Didn't even occur to me to try the hook with environmental effects and the like.

I did enjoy some of the destruction bits quite a lot - taking down the comms tower actually took some thought.
