That's my take as well: platter DENSITY is the issue.

But again, desperate, random cheap shot at Tom's Hardware.....which, over time has earned my respect, makes me sad.

And, never forget: respect....is earned. It will forever elude those reduced to demanding it.

Where did I take a cheap shot at Tom's? You realize anyone can post on a forum, both knowledgeable and not. Even here.

Tom's is not my favorite place for benchmarks, and I don't care for Passmark either. Every time I look for a chip/hard drive/whatever I run across a passmark link. It always compares something that is way out of it's league, 3x the cost, or both. But I also will say that hard drive benchmarks are tough. Just so many situations to consider when rating those so that everyone will get an idea as to comparable speed numbers in different situations.

Higher density equals faster read speeds. No doubt an SSD is faster. I put together a machine for a friend/customer with an SSD last week and he couldn't be happier.

I'll be honest. I have 8 gigs of RAM. The desktop runs at least two weeks between reboots. I am not too concerned with getting an SSD right now, when most of the stuff we run has been stored into memory to begin with. Just too many other things to use the money for.

I like Tom's, not for benchmarks, but for accurate data and good discussions.

I follow CPU benchmarks, did in choosing the (used but perfect) system I am on, cause I start with the chip. All I learned was confirmed subjectively.

You always are. Honest. Re SSDs, I will be more open when I am convinced they are not as problematic as, my take is...... too many still are. And, sorry, the often sudden demise factor.....makes me nervous.

What you did, was demand compliance with yr strategy. I found the strategy wanting, as did others here. I questioned it witb my usual nuclear goal of owning more data and so, more clarity in order to make a differential assessment. That is how the journey works in all arenas.

Starting with any decent pre school.....thru any enlightened medical practice.

You read all that into my recommendation to look for 1TB platters? I didn't see anyone else disagree but you. Good luck in your search for information.

The funny thing is, at least if the original link had been to an article by Tom's staff, you'd be correct in saying that he impugned Tom's, but I'd wager dollars-to-donuts that EVERYONE on Tom's staff would actually agree with WilliamM2 re: platter density, so it's somewhat absurd to say that he's maligning Tom's hardware's reputation.

I stand by my take. The use of the word "random" in any reference to any post on any site.....is unusual, and, I submit, in this case, had specific meaning.....esp within the context of what still feels clearly like some demand everyone employ the poster's strategy.

Those seem really expensive for older-tech 500 GB drives.

I mean, the fact that hard drives work at all is pretty incredible, but $240 for a 500 GB WD Black is awfully steep when you can get a 1 TB Seagate (with a single denser platter) for $50...

As I am often moved to say here....OLDER does not necessarily mean Less Than.

The drives in question remain exceptional. I count my blessings every day, I came upon the one I am writing from this past November on eBay.

I agree re that HDDS work at all is incredible, being the ultimate anti cynic.....I find everything puter-related incredible.....and jus plain thrilling. Course, I find a lot of life both incredible and thrilling.🙂

But to be brutally honest with you, none of them hold a candle to my Crucial 128GB M4 and my Crucial 240GB M500 SSD drives.

I've sold several dozen SSD drives at my work over the last couple of years and have not had a single failure yet.

We've also sold several dozen Black edition drives and had at least a dozen or more fail.

As long as you go with a reputable vendor such as Crucial, Samsung, Plextor, or Corsair, the failure rate is substantially lower than a mechanical drive.

Nobody has to convince anyone with a brain re the speed of SSDs. I KNOW.

But I am not going there yet. Pls honor and accept that. If I still used my laptop, I would upgrade it with an SDD. But I never use it; I use this desktop inside and my phone outside, and all possible bases are covered.

I also plan to stick with my internal backup strategy, wherein I do new clones form the drive I mainly boot into to my backup drive around once a week. I have zero interest in having my OS on an SDD and most other things on a backup drive. As it is my boot time with this drive is around 30 seconds. In every way, it is as fast as I could want.

Yes indeed, I not only know Blacks (as do all drives, now, more than ever) fail, some almost immeidately, I knew it in detial re the specific drive I am in right now, before I chose this model and submitted my Best Offer price for one I felt was The One.
