Just came home from a head on collision

So I drive home after school/work. I take a left turn at an intersection to go home to my apartment. As I'm starting to accelerate from the turn, I see this brown cadillac heading toward me, in MY lane. Puzzled, I wonder if he's supposed to be turning into the Allergy Clinic to my left.

He keeps on going. I realize something is very wrong, and then a split second later, I get hit head on. Both airbags deploy, and I'm thrown back against the seat. Glass starts flying, and when the car's stopped I see that the whole windshield is cracked.

He must have been going 30+ MPH, while I was about 10 or 15 (I was just coming out of the turn). A bit shaken (and saying swear words inside my head), I look around, and spot the driver of the other car. It's an old man, and he looks pretty dazed. People start running out, and I call 911. The operator asks if I'm ok, and then asks me to find out if the other driver's alright. I tell her I'm stuck in my car and can't get out because the doors are jammed. She insists I found out if the other driver is fine.

A doctor comes out from the Allergy Clinic, and asks if I'm ok. I state that I feel fine, and he helps me open the car door (which is almsot completely jammed shut from the accident). Meanwhile, the 911 operator's been insisting the whole time that I found out about the old man.

I get out of my vehicle, and glance at the damage, and then run to his car (which is about 20 feet away, haphazardly on the curb). There are no visible signs of injury, but he looks dazed and confused. He requests medical attention.

Meanwhile, a few witnesses are gathered around asking me what's going on. "Where's the driver of the white car, Is he ok?" I start to say something, and then they realize that I'm the driver. "Holy Cow, you're the driver! Man he plowed right into you." The front of my sedan is completely crumpled, it looks as if whoever in the car would have some serious injuries.

Paramedics come, the policeman arrives. They check me out, and I sign a waiver saying that I deny Paramedic treatment. They tell me to be careful, and to go to the hospital if I have any fainting spells. There are couple of witnesses who speak to the police. I hear talk that the man fell asleep at the wheel.

Anyway, after getting all my information taken down by the police, I get ready to leave. Before I go, I comment to the policeman that I was pretty lucky with what happened, since I had no apparent injuries. However, if my car hadn't been there, he might have traveled in a straight arrow right into the oncoming traffic. That would have been very bad. Fortunately I took the impact, only going about 15 mph.

I feel very blessed, and bit shaken. I think I better stay home tonight and make sure I'm ok though.

I think he was around 70. When I saw the car barrelling toward me, I instantly knew I was going to be a victim of an elderly accident. First, the car was a cadillac. Second, I saw specks of gray hair, and the car was driving very wildly. I feel bad for the man, when we were gathered around to make sure he was alright, he mentioned that he'd just had heart surgery a couple of weeks ago and needed to go to the hospital since the bag deployed into his chest.

Holy sh!t... you hit a heavy car like a caddy and came away unharmed. You, my friend, are one lucky bastard. You should probably go buy a lottery ticket now. :p

I was driving a 98 Ford Taurus. So that's a pretty big car itself.

Anyway, I came out of the accident pumping with adrenaline, but not too ticked. If it was a drunk driver, or someone driving recklessly, I would have gotten postal. Granted the man shouldn't have been driving in his condition, but I was bit more sympathetic.

"A doctor comes out from the Allergy Clinic..."
You are lucky you pulled through. I can't tell you how many times doctors want to help, but when you tell them they need to sign a form accepting all responsibility for treatment (no such form exists, we bluff) they back off. The sad fact is a doctor (even a podiatrist) can take charge of an emergency scene if they accept responsibility, but they have ZERO training in emergency medicine.

There was a great story on 60 min a couple years ago that said how you were in better care with paramedics than with most ER docs, especially with cardiac calls. (er docs in many areas are rotated in from hospital staff)

Glad to hear you did ok.

Glad you're OK. Personally, I would have accepted the paramedic treatment just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, the father of one of my friends is the head of the local EMS. Those guys are incredible.

Yah, I realized that I probably should have gone to the hospital to be on the safe side. But I wanted to stay and make sure all the insurance forms and papers, and stuff with the police was taken care of. However, the hospital is one minute away from my house (probably 5 by walking distance), just in case.

Airbags probably saved your life. You need to send a case of wine to the engineering department of your automanufacturer.

Great to hear no one was seriously hurt. In the end, that is all that matters :)

Wow! Glad you're ok, for the most part.

I bet you start feeling back/neck pain very soon and you SHOULD go see your regular doctor tomorrow and ask for a referral to an orthopedic specialist. I wish I had gone to a dr. immediately after a wreck I had in '97.
