i'm 25, i run regularly but i'm pretty heavy for my height, 5'8" at 185. i actually lost weight since i started school again, i was 190-195.

here's a pic

doc says i gotta get it down to less then 200 preferably 150ish.

then he really gave me the bad news...NO MORE CHEESE! damn! no more cheese, no more shrimp, no beef. but he says i should drink a glass of redwine a day and cook w/ olive oil.

btw, my cholesterol is 255. doc says it's partially genetics as my mom has high cholesterol also.

anywho, i guess i just wanted to tell people who havent gotten it check to go get it. the irony is i have really low blood pressure, i believe 60ish, usually people w/ high cholesterol have high blood pressure.

go get it checked people! save you the trouble later on when you double over with chest pains when your 40.

people usually get it checked when they get their physical. it's actually a blood test that checks your cholesterol and triglcycerol levels...

here's some more info:

You don't really look hefty in that pic, but that chick sure is frightened. 😉

Good luck getting your cholesterol lowered.

On a good note--my chest pain was due to inflammation of the sternum after further investigation 😉

By the way, eat plain oatmeal everyday. It will lower your cholesterol a fair bit (go read up on this). I'm surprised the doctor never mentioned that.

i don't know about my cholesterol but I can't imagine it being low... with all the fast food and crap I eat all the time even if I'm active (not recently though). I'm 5'10" 160 so that's looking ok for me. Last time I checked at those do-it-yourself machines, my blood pressure was normal. I do feel chest pains on some occasions after a huge meal. Are there any other signs of high cholesterol without going to the doc ?

I can't give up cheese. I eat pizza and other Italian meals at least three times a week.

Before I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, my cholesterol was ~277. After 1 month of taking lipitor and changing my diet, it was down to 103.

Just have to cut out the junk food. Easiest method I found was to just not buy anymore junk.

eat more chicken

i actually do eat lots of chicken. since my mom has high cholesterol she only cooks chicken and fish at home. i hardly eat out cause i'm a poor college student. i gotta do more testing to narrow down the problems.

If you're heavy for your height, it certainly doesn't show! :Q Must be muscle mass from the running?

a fair amount of mtn biking in hs, then marital arts in college, i tore a miniscus a fews years back so i'm limited to running now.

i highly recommend going to a doctor thats the only way to really find out. even if your okay, i'd still recommend it cause it's nice to hear that your in good shape. he says i can eat cheese...just goat cheese like feta...thank god i like feta!

how often do you go to the doctor for your recalls? are you still taking liptor? my doc advised against meds for now, he wants to see if i can lower it myself by changing my diet first. if that doesn't work then he'll consider recommending meds.

My doc told me the same thing. He didn't tell me how to get motivated though.

I visit my endo every 3 months. I'm still taking lipitor. Since I have good medical insurance, I figure it's worth it 🙂

wow, every 3 months??? that actually makes sense since meds would work quicker then dieting, mines every 6 months. also, not taking advantage of your insurance should be a crime.

103? Best way is not to take medication but 103 is impressive.

Two of my doctors and my bro in law told me to take medication because I was diabetic. I do agree with you that it would have been better w/o it though. But as long as it's lower than 277 🙂
