Just busted my 9700pro :(

Yup, i'm an i-dee-oat. I was installing a VGA silencer rev3 onto my Radeon 9700pro, used AS5, put everything into the pc, and now i'm getting artifacts everywhere. I don't know what really happend. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I scratched the GPU with a straight edge while trying to get the old thermal grease off, but I havn't noticed any scratches. I'm still using the card now, I just get artifacts in games, and a little bit in windows. 🙁

How much AS5 did you put on?! yikes that sucks majorly.

Edit: Good luck trying to RMA it, first you'll need to get rid of every last trace of AS5 and put the stock heatsink back on. If I were you, i'd remove the AS5 and try ceramique instead.

Grr at people who RMA things they all but intentionally destroy. This is a part of why restocking fees can be difficult to avoid too.

Try removing the shim around the gpu, your silencer might not even be in contact with the gpu. Does the silencer get really hot?

Yup, dirty thieves. Might as well go to Compusa and shoplift a new card.

Clean off the AS5 and try again. I did the same thing to my 9500 pro and once I removed AS and put just a little bit back on all was ok, sometimes too much thermal paste can be worse than none.

Artic silver might not be as good as using a non conductive thermal grease. I have some generic thermal paste on my 9500 pro although with ram sinks and a heatsink that is just massive. Have it volt modded and running at 372 memory 351 core. Don't know how people with my same setup beat me in 03 though. Must be turning settings to crap to get it running fast.

AS isn't conductive, its very slightly capacitive. I've spread the stuff all over ram chips (shorting out legs on the chips in the process) without problem.

well i'm able to RMA it with mwave.com, but only for a refurbd one. this is the second time i've had to rma with them, first time wasn't my fault, card just died. i'll try to reapply the as5 later today, or tomorrow.
Out of curiosity, what was the reason you gave mwave.com for the RMA?

screen was artifacting because something was wrong with the vid card. that's pretty much it. btw i didn't really plan on OC the card, I just wanted to replace the noisy stock fan.

$150 for mine and its staying in the pc. I dont care how loud but i dont trust myself messing around and i have no job to back it up.

AS5 works fine as long as you use an nice thin layer and don't get that stuff on anything else.

BTW, I don't personally know the quality of the aftermarket part your using, but I know for a fact that many aftermarket coolers are worthless. They are some that are good, but I found the oem heatsink works better than most. I think that either your cooler is just low performance or you didn't install it right. Your getting artifact cause your gpu is getting too hot. I bet if you put the oem back on all will be good.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I used Clockgen and busted my 9800's RAM chips. But its playable when my system is not over clocked. Still waiting for the x800 to hit the shelves.
