what's up guys.

so i just 'built' my first computer a couple days ago, and i'm getting a couple odd problems.

i'll post my specs first before i continue:

Windows XP Pro w/ SP2
AMD Socket 939 3500+
ASUS A8V Deluxe Mobo
Leadtek 6600gt
Corsair XMS 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
Seagate 200GB 7200RPM IDE HDD
ASUS Black 16X DVD-ROM
Audigy2 ZS GAMER
LINKSYS Wireless-G PCI Ethernet Adapter

first thing is probably something i should know but am not really sure about..

how do i update the bios for the mobo? what should i do with the .AMI file?

second thing is, the comp seems to be running fine... i loaded up a couple games and they run great and are perfectly stable during extended gaming periods, but for some reason when i exit the games, as it's going back to the desktop my computer crashes and reboots. when it boots up again and gets back to windows i get a "windows has recovered from a serious error

BCCode 1000000a BCP1 9D086240 BCP2 00000002 BCP3 00000000
BCP4 8051EC1C OSVer 5_1_2600 SP 2_0 Product 256_1"

message...

most of my hardware drivers are just off the bundled cd's except for the 6600gt which is v66.93.

if anyone can help me out that'd be great.

Hi newguy - welcome to the forum

what psu are you using?

Get all the newest drivers from the net.
Including chipset drivers -
install all
see what happens first.
Please let us know what happens.

if updating drivers doesn't do it, i would change the psu, just to be on the safe side

well im not overclocking and the temps arent bad at all. cpu and vid card idle around low the 40's high 30's and dont get a whole lot hotter when gaming.

i'm also getting this other problem i forgot to mention before. when i'm sitting on the desktop and i click random things to open up like "IE, My computer, solitare" whatever... i get like a little choppy delay which is annoying... and i looked at my cpu usage and it sits pretty low but when i click stuff/open files it spikes up to 100% causing the choppyness. i'm not sure if that's a ram issue or something but i have a gig of ram so i dunno.

i updated the drivers to my hardware components, but i havent updated my mobo bios yet "cuz i'm still tryin to figure out how"

any ideas?

1. don't update your motherboard bios unless you need to (which I'm not sure you do in this case)

what slot is your audigy in?

try putting it in slot 4 (see page 2-16 of your manual), also put your lan card in slot 2 and disable the onboard lan (if you've not already done so)

also - the reboot behaviour is the default way XP is setup to respond to a software crash. If you disable auto reboot (in system properties) the system will Blue Screen instead and will give you an Error code/description and name of the service/driver or application that caused the error.

my pci slots are filled like this

agp 6600gt
------------

empty
------------

Audigy 2
------------

empty
------------

wireless lan card
------------

empty
------------

i could have sworn i heard somewhere that i was supposed to put the soundcard in 1 of the 2 nearest pci slots to the agp... however i probably made a mistake. i'll try configuring it like you say and see if anything happens.

well i swapped around the pci cards so the audigy is in slot 4 and the wireless lan is in slot 2, but theres not really any difference. i'm still getting the crazy cpu usage spikes that make my comp seem like its lagging. i took a screenshot to give you an idea:

Picture

the spikes are from clicking on things that should not be using up that much power... like opening 'my computer' or 'IE' etc. will take like 5-10 seconds *ugh* which is alot slower than my old 1.1ghz athlon comp.

i hope i can pinpoint and remedy this soon, it's starting to bug me haha

well the spikes on your task manager picture are nothing to worry about, there are no sustained peaks and it looks quite normal to me.

I'd suggest you download/run hdtach and see what kind of disc i/o speeds you're getting

have you had any further crashes/reboots?

This may sound dumb but....

If your video card is an AGP version of the 6600GT you need to plug a power lead into the video card.

Have you done this?

i'm benchmarking with HDtach right now, i'll post when it's done.

no crashes or reboots other than when i exit from a game back to the desktop.

Ouch. :Q Something is hugely wrong there. decent HD Tach benchie. Yours should be somewhere in the 60MB+ range at the start. Try with all the PCI cards removed, to see if it's some kind of IRQ clash.

Also: what antivirus and firewall software do you have, and is all your software, um, legit in nature? If nothing else comes to light, please post a HijackThis 1.99 logfile.

edit: I thought of another angle here... (1) is the drive on the VIA IDE controllers (yes probably is good here, as opposed to the Promise ATA controller), and (2) you have the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers installed, correct? Look in the Hardware Manager list for the IDE controllers, expand that item to show the primary and secondary controllers, and look at the Advanced tab for each of them to ensure that they're not stuck in PIO mode.

You're using 80-wire ATA cables, I hope :) If you're not sure, check here.

dang this is kinda crazy

i haven't installed any antivirus software yet and my firewall is just the windows xp sp2 firewall and my software is legit.
i have the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and VIA IDE controllers installed, and none of my controllers are in PIO mode.

also yes for the 80 wire ATA cables. =)

I don't see anything to be alarmed at on your HJT logfile. Maybe the HDD is faulty. Can you throw it into a different computer and do a HDTach benchie on it in the other computer, as a fact-finding step? And maybe run the Seagate diagnostics on it, the long test (takes a while). Seagate SeaTools diagnostics including an online one.

well, i don't really have access to test the hdd on another computer... but i got some weird results with it today.

so last night i ran the seagate diagonstic tools, here's the log:

informational purposes only. We suggest you should consider testing with
the official file system diagnostic utilities for your operating system.
Seagate is not able to assist with troubleshooting or reviewing
file system test results.

******************************************

Recommendation:
All selected physical diagnostics passed.

If you are not experiencing data loss and SeaTools reports File
System Structure errors, they may be caused by a lock-up or
failure to shutdown Windows correctly. Many times, these errors
may be repaired through normal system maintenance which
includes using the Windows provided "Defrag" and
"Scandisk / Chkdsk / Error Checking" utilities.

If you are experiencing a hardware error, you should isolate
the cause and replace the failing component. If you are unsure how
to proceed with repairs, contact a computer professional. After
completing any maintenance tasks, run SeaTools again to
verify that all errors have been repaired. If errors continue to
occur, the system may not be stable. Again, contact a computer
professional.

========================================================

afterwords i tried running the windows error checking utility on the drive... but it didn't really do anything.

after that i tried doing a repair install of windows on the partition and ran HDtach again and got much higher scores *i didn't take a screenshot tho*... but then i went to sleep, and today i ran HD tach again and it was back to the 3.2MB/s speed. so i formatted the drive and tried reinstalling windows again, and i just ran HD tach again, heres the benchmarks:

Quick Benchmark 2

Long Benchmark 2

it's better, but i don't know what's up with those huge dips in performance. i'll reinstall all my drivers and run HDtach again and see if i'm still getting reasonable scores or if it slows down to 3.2MB/s again

Is your Windows Firewall enabled with no exceptions allowed, and have you gotten some antivirus software installed yet? All your software's legit?

What version of Norton do you have? 2004 or later I hope. And what exceptions are you allowing, is there a good (and safe) reason for them?

crap, well apparently i overlooked that the IDE controller for the HDD was in PIO mode... but it's giving me an annoying problem.

i can't switch it to DMA mode unless i uninstall the IDE controller, reboot, and let windows redetect the drivers automatically in which case it goes into UDMA mode...

but if i restart my comp again, it goes back into PIO mode and i can't select DMA mode unless i repeat the process.

Hi there, I'm experiencing exactly the same problems as the thread's author already explained... what makes me think, as I use kind a similar system, that there's a kind of Hardware conflict or something like that...

My Specs:

Windows XP with SP2
AMD 64 Socket 939 3000+
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe
Leadtek 6600GT Extreme
Corsair ValueRam 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM SATA HDD

I already tried different drivers for nearly each part of my system...
Do you have any idea yet how to solve those problems?

greets
