I built a decent cheapie system for my wife to play the SIMS on. She was using a Duron 950 with 256 megs SDRAM and a 20 gig 5400 spin harddrive and a geforce mx4000

I built her a kt266 PCCHIPS board system with a Duron 1.8 gigahertz applebred, a 40 gig 7200 spin Samsung drive, and a Radeon 9600, along with a DVD Writer to back up all her sims stuff on.

I'm typing on it now as Autopatcher does it's thing.

I was plesantly suprised by the PCCHIPS board. I paid 25.00 for it brand new and was a little leary since normally I paid the premium for ASUS. Well let me tell ya, this little board was a winner. I'll no longer pay the 'extra' for other motherboards :)

Give it a month and report back. Should only take ~1 month for that POS pcchips board to crap out.

Yes i Agree.

I created a file server for my closet with the 25$ PCCHIPS mobo and have nothing but great things to say about it.

Up time is reaching 2 months now.

I've built 4 computers with PC Chips boards. Had problems with 1 out of the 4. It ran but everything ran really slow. I think it was a chipset problem. The other 3 worked just fine though. They are fine for internet/e-mail computers.

Hmm, no love for a review of a component?

Seriously, the board is older technology no doubt. It went in fine, was sturdy, had excellent docs. I had no problem figuring out anything on the board. On the other hand, I remember ASUS's manual for my board was hard to figure out, particulary the front panel connections.

The board posted the first time, no errors. I updated the bios to the latest available - again no problems. The board is running cool.

Ehh .. I am not a big fan of Pc Chips ... however, my brother has had an ECS (PC Chips) mobo in his box for about 2 years now ... so far no problems.

I tend to go with the middle of the road brands for mobos, Shuttle, Gigabyte, Soyo, Epox ... etc.
Though my favorite board that I have ever owned was my Abit BH6 .... (I was somewhat disappointed with my Abit KT133 board .... so from that point on I was no longer "brand loyal")

I seem to remember a few years back that Asus was trying to buy PCChips as a low-end product line. WOnder if they did?

The same. ECS is the largest producer of motherboards worldwide. Just badged under different brands. To be the biggest you do have to have some semblance of quality. Though I don't buy them, I've never had a problem with the many I've encountered.

I have had exactly 1 problem with an ECS board, and I have used >20 of 'em. PCChips = ECS FYI. ECS Rocks for the cost.

I will gladly pay extra for an Asus board. Less headaches, less compatibility problems, more bios updates, and LESS FAILURES!

If ECS and PCChips are the same, then PCChips should be fine. I did 5 or 6 machines for friends and family about 3 years ago when the ECS K7S5A was the hot budget board for Athlon/Duron and all are still running fine.

Off brands are touch and go. Could be you got a board that'll last forever, could be it'll be gone in another couple hours. The big names, Asus, Soyo, etc. worry more about making sure more of their boards last, so, as a rule, I buy from companies like them. I've had an ASUS and a Soyo, never had trouble with either of them.
