I just built a computer (in record time too, 48 minutes!)

It has an amd 2600+ processor and an Epox 8RDA3 mobo

I am using a western digital 40 gig hard drive that is pretty old but I am sure works

When i boot up with it plugged in, it freezes while "Detecting IDE Devices"

When its not plugged in, it boots up but obviously doesnt do anything bc there is no hard drive installed

Why am I having this problem?

I remmeber with my last build, it was an MSI mobo and i had the same problem and it was solved because MSI said that old western digital 40 gig hard drives were not compatbile with that mobo and there was nothing I could do...so i had to buy a new one....and this is exactly why I did not use MSI for this purchase...i hope its not the same problem!

thanks

Try to specify the drive 'hardcoded' using the bios setup parameters instead of auto-detect, maybe that will do the job.

Make sure you have your hard drive jumpered correctly. On some models you have
a "master with no slave" or "master with slave" setting and not jumpered right will
make for an unhappy boot.

You also may want to change out your IDE cable and see if that makes a difference.

WDs don't like being on the channel by themselves. Pull the jumper if using as the master if it is sitting there all by it's lonesome.

hm this is random
i unplugged it, hit delete and got into the settings, then i plugged it back in and hit auto detect

and it detected it

and now it runs fine

until it starts booting up and i get this blue screen before it tries to load windows

Stop 0x0000007b

I had this hard drive operationg with a completely different system before....could this just be conflicting with something? if i just format should it work okay?
