Hey guys,

Just order a HTC Desire Z; my first (and hopefully not my last) Android phone.

I'm coming in from an S60 device (a Nokia 5800) so I'm hoping I can pick up the OS pretty easily. I know everyone here hates Symbian, but that phone has actually served me quite well.

Anyways, I was wondering where do you guys go for Android / smartphone news and info? I lurk howardforums, but that place seems to be pretty slow lately.

I'm sure I'll have tons of questions once i get the device (ground shipping from canada, so will take a few days), so I'll post them here when they come up.

Thanks

I lurk around android central. Decent for news but the forums kind of suck. droiddog.com is another good news site.

hey guys,

just got the phone; shipping took forever =X
Still getting used to it, but loving it so far.

Couple questions tho:

1) everywhere I look it says android updates have to be manufacturer / carrier approved before getting released OTA. Since I'm using a Bell branded phone on the AT&T network (eg. AT&T does not carry this phone) does that mean I won't be getting any OTA updates at all?

2) Is there a way to turn on the screen other than using the power button? the power button is a little hard to press for me

3) Is there a way to calibrate the touch screen? the touch inputs registers higher than where I press on the screen, and I can't seem to find a setting to adjust that

1) yes until you root. And with that phone, you will be rooting soon.

2) dunno but I doubt it

3) I've seen it on some ROMs but not many

Check out XDA's Desire Z (G2) section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=750

I would be very quick to root that phone. It has a ton of potential to be unleashed.

Search the Market for an app called "No Lock". It gives you a widget that allows you to turn the phone lock on/off with one tap. While the phone is unlocked, any button can be used to wake it up. A single tap re-locks the phone for travel, etc.

I'll second or third xda, but for app news i recommend www.appbrain.com for app suggestions, its a social/curated list. You can download the app to your phone and use it as well.

Basically it lets you see what apps other users have on their phone, so if you know a few tech-heads its a nice way to find decent apps.

I suggest following Leo Laporte, Gina Trapani, and me ;)

Anyone else here have a list up?

None of you have TuneIn!?

Will give a try. I don't know that I have a favorite radio station though, I haven't listened to the radio since getting my first in-dash mp3 player many years ago.

I think if I had a passive commute (riding vs driving) I might have more varied apps like the Frisco and New York city kids.
