So I decided to build a computer (my first one btw), and I needed a pci express video card. I am not a huge gamer but want something decent. The card was 89 bucks AR, but at CC they have the x700 pro for 179AR and the 6600 for 179. So my question is, should I cough up the extra 100 for the better video card? Does the card I have suck horribly. I looked on Tomshardware benchmarks and the x300 is pretty low compared to the other two. Like I said I am a newb, so any info will be appreciated.

damn...comp usa, best buy and other retailers can rip you off. First of all, you can compare prices @ www.pricewatch.com . Since it is reliable to get an idea how the cards should be priced. Nonetheless, I can recommend you to online retailers which are reliable in my experience. first off is shop.ati.com or www.newegg.com . some ppl would disagree with me, but just to make it fair game some are :

www.tigerdirect.com
www.zipzoomfly.com
www.ewiz.com
www.mwave.com
www.monarchcomputer.com

But check out shop.ati.com since they have a refurbished sale on a X800 pro for 179.00 !!! for both pci-e and agp. They are instock, and it includes 3 year warranty !

Yea I know retail sucks, but I am impatient, and want it kinda quickly. I guess if I went that route, I could just wait till the weekend to build it

I could probably go the extra 100, but it would be a HUGE difference wouldn't it. I figure if I'm building it, might as well put decent things in it....Oh yea, should I worry about refurb stuff from ati?

well, based on the member's experience with ATi, their cards they received are great or looked new (but then again, 2 of them so far had problems that are mild and are going to return for an exchange). But in any case, if your in a hurry and save another 10 bucks and want performance out of it. If you have a pc-club store near by in your area or anywhere near where you live. I'm sure an EVGa 6600 GT will suffice @ 169.99 which is not bad at all, since it can and will out perform a 6600 vanilla and the x700 pro

man thanks so much for your help. I looked and I have one about 5 min. from me. Like I said I don't do any heavy gaming, but want something that is decent. That may be the winner. Thanks

I never even thought about going into that place before, I am definitly gonna stop by tomorrow though

EDIT: looks like the 6600gt is in stock, and the 6600 is oderable

Check out the x800 from either newegg or zzf (OOS though). There are rebates involved, but besides that, they're fairly inexpensive, and they are better than the 6600gt.

The X700 is just about the same card as the old 9800pros with 128bit busses, just buit with a newer chip and a little faster but not much and not enough to top the 9800xt in any case. On the other than the x700pro does beat the 9800xt in fillrate but doesn't even come close to it in memory bandwidth. Still, the x700 is a respectable card and if you plan to do any gameing and a much better deal at $70 than that $90 x300se.

NO, the X700 non-pro is close in performance to the 9700, and the X700Pro is a tad slower than the 9800Pro.

Remember, the X700 is a 128bit card, both the 9700 and 9800 are 256bit. The 9800XT would blow the X700 out of the water.

But holy crap!, for $69.99 and no rebate, that X700 is a smokin deal. They overclcock like a motha too. I would jump on that instead of a crappy X300 anything.

The X300se is like the offspring of sh*t. Get yourself a 6800. for under 200 beans online.

very true...had one in my old rig before upping to a X850XTPE. that card could barely reach 1000 in 3dmark05. its 64bit for godsake.
