Just bought the $250 XBox One Bitcoin special from Newegg

Aahhh! What am I doing? Did not expect to buy one (already have a ps4) and before I knew what happened I pulled the trigger. It's the assassin creed bundle + year xbox live + $40 newegg gift card for $250 (if using bitcoin to purchase). Not a bad deal.

Never owned any Xbox product before. I guess curiosity got the best of me.

My biggest question: I use an HTPC with windows media center to watch all my OTA TV. Anybody know if that can connect through the xbox one?

Now to decide if I should get the kinect.

As far as home TV viewing goes, anything that uses an HDMI cable should work with the Xbox One.

Get a Kinect if you intend to use the Xbox as a sort of all in one entertainment set top box, if you want to be able to turn your system and tv on/off with voice commands, or if you want to be able to do stuff like say "xbox record that" to record anything cool that happened in a game you're playing.

I'd only get the Kinect if you can find it for $75 or less. $150 is too high of an MSRP, and I even think that $100 is pushing it. At first, I was fine having the Kinect for voice commands, but to be honest, I don't even find that aspect useful anymore. It's easier to just use the controller, unless you use a lot of different things at a time. For me, I play 1-2 games at a time, and I'm not a big user of the Game DVR functionality.

Oh, and the HTPC should be fine. I actually played Super Smash Bros. on my Wii U with no discernable input lag through my One (TV only has 2 HDMI ports, which are taken by my desktop and Xbox One). Just remember that the HDMI in is ALWAYS considered TV by the system, so if you use the Kinect, it'll be with the, "Xbox, Watch TV," command.

Hmm...that's tough. I imagine that each system has feature parity for those games, so they shouldn't differ. It could be that Microsoft's Mojang purchase could lead to short-term exclusives with Minecraft DLC, but that's just a guess. Other than that, it'll always be about the exclusives you want. For me, Halo: TMCC's campaign is the best co-op experience on either console at the moment, but that's obviously my opinion, not yours.

You could opt to run the PS4 through HDMI pass-through into your One and never have to decide, of course. With the multi-platform games, I would choose either the platform whose controller you prefer or the console where you'd most likely play online with friends.

I surprisingly found out that the xbox one does work with htpc windows media center. But I'd still Google it again and try and find out details if I was you. I wasn't going to risk it personally that my htpc wouldn't work with xboxone and that was the killer feature for me

I'll probably take you up on that. Between skype and the dance games for the kids I think it will be useful for us.

Don't pay anymore then $60 for a kinect, they are a dime a dozen on craigslist

That's about my interaction every time with the Kinect. It works fine when you try to turn it off, but it absolutely refuses to turn on no matter how long of a pause I leave between "Xbox" and "on".

Yeah, it's about 50-50 that it works for me on that. I only do it because I have the Kinect, not because it's convenient. I used to use the Kinect to do things like snapping an app, but the controller feature is now easier, and it doesn't require my talking at the console (which still feels weird).

This is their next gen? I'm already jaded on this system. Hopefully it will redeem itself when I actually get to play a game.

Not really a MS thing, that's how it's been for a while. Even the ps3 had to install games to HDD because bluray drives are slow. And having to update the game to play has been the way it goes since last generation as well.

I think you're misunderstanding. It was just baffling to me that it automatically began to download all 33GB from the servers instead of installing it off the disk. My ps3 and ps4 will install from disk, and then download and install any needed updates which is the way it should be.

I'll bet the XB live servers being down during christmas helped more people than it hurt. Sure they didn't have multiplayer, but at least they got around downloading tens of GB of data (and hence many hours of down time) for no reason since it would have installed from disk.

What makes you think that it was downloading the game, rather than installing from the disc, as all games do when you put the disc into the drive?

Network settings has a history where it shows data downloaded by hour. Nothing else was downloading 20+ gigs at 1.3MB/s

It was one transaction at about .75 bitcoin.
