I could believe someone getting lucky 3 times if they knew how to play blackjack. As the number of trips to the casino gets higher and higher, you are gonna start to lose money though, no matter how good you think you are. (At least when you are playing the house)

That's why I only play once in a blue moon & with money I can afford to lose ($100-$200)

Are you sure you had a Dyson? My DC-14 Animal has a HEPA filter cartridge...and FWIW, if the thing sucks up loose carpet fibers, that's fine with me, as long as it also gets all the pet hair and dirt.

Absolutely 110% sure. This is why the Dyson tends to fail in most 'testing' situations even though consumers rave about "how much it picks up after my main vacuum"...

Also it doesn't (or at least mine didn't..) just pull up loose fibers in the beginning. Even a year later the canister is 1/2 carpet fiber.

Flip it over and check out the beater bar, compare the bristles to other vacuums. The bristles are extremely stiff and thick, which tend to 'pull' the carpet up rather than comb dirt out.

...It's not a bad vacuum (in my admittedly non-professional opinion anyway..) I'd just be concerned if I had new or cheap carpet. I also think people are a bit misinformed since these things tend to get rave reviews.

My Dyson that I got for xmas in 2005 is still going strong, I think its a DC07...Anyways like SpatiallyAware mentioned it sucked up a ton of carpet fuzz from my apartment carpet.

Its a moot point since my last two places have had hardwood floors.

Werd. Hater's going to hate.

If someone announced they just bought a Lexus LS460, some jackal would come in and say it's a waste of money and his Hyundai accent would do the same thing for 1/10 less of a price.

I'm guessing this is directed at me?

I don't think they're a waste of money - as I said, the build quality is great. Hell, if I still rented a place I'd have kept mine. I'm also not one of the people that judges anyone for spending their hard earned money as they see fit but I do think one should be aware of all factors involved. It's not like a luxury car where you know what you're getting when you buy it.

This is a case where it's REALLY easy to buy one, bring it home, and think that it pulled 3-4 CUPS of dirt out of carpet that was just vacuumed... Seriously, when yours arrives take a few macro shots of what comes out and you'll see it's almost all carpet fibers.

We've had our Animal for almost 4 years. Yes, it still picks up some carpet fiber...but we have a PET carpet (polyethylene) and it sheds almost as bad as our pets...cheap POS carpet...due for replacement because, not only does it shed fibers, once you spill anything on it...the stain is there forever.
Our Electrolux canister also picked up some carpet fibers, and so did the POS Hoover we had before that.

I don't see how those discs can possibly filter while allowing enough airflow through them. I'd much rather see a large cartridge or something with decent surface area.

The fact that they have such long service intervals (imo) really shows that they don't filter much or else they'd clog. Same as the beater bar, this may not be an issue to a lot of people.. But the reality is that in order to have decent suction a sacrifice must be made in order to use a 4" x 2" filter.

Compare this to the "old" vacuums (like the eureka boss) where the -entire- bag is a huge hepa filter.. Since the filter surface area is so large they can then afford to filter more without losing suction.

How much have you lost at the casino the other times you were there though? People are funny, they always tell you about the time they won at the casino but never tell you how much they've lost. Aside from those extremely rare instances nobody ever comes out ahead playing odds at a casino...well, except the casino of course.

In reality, that vacuum cleaner probably cost you $10,000. 😛

That's true but if you're not playing for too much, it works out much cheaper than other forms of entertainment.

i got a DC17 refurb off woot for like $240. Only been 2 yrs so far, and my only complaint is a design issue - have to unravel the entire cord to take out the extending tube.

I bought the same vacuum at Christmas time. My impressions so far are a big meh. It does a decent job cleaning although I find it hard to believe the beater bar is so aggressive as a previous poster stated because the beater bar on the ball model is driven by its own little motor. The ball is a great idea and makes it very easy to move around. My biggest complaints are that the cord is very short (maybe 15 ft.) and dust cup on the ball model is significantly smaller than the regular Dyson. EDIT: also using the hose function is cumbersome.

It's odd, I never thought that I'd wish I had money to spare for a nice vacuum. And yet here I am wanting one.

I tried using my old Vacuum a couple days ago and it may well have just moved the dirt around the carpet rather then actually cleaning it. It's loud, heavy, and impossible to maneuver effectively to boot. =\

The issue isn't with the speed of the beater bar, it's with the stiffness of the bristles which is (or was a few years ago) the same across all Dyson models.

Rather than flexing and bending through the carpet it tends to grab the loops and rip them up.

....like I said, I'm not anti-Dyson or anything like that, but but check your canister next time you vacuum - actually dump the contents out and look at what is dirt/dust/lint/etc and compare that to the carpet fiber. It may not seem like a lot (usually about 1/2 carpet fiber) but over 4-5 years of vacuuming it will add up. Your carpet will not regrow fibers, eventually you'll have bare spots like I (and others) did.

Cheap carpet will do that no matter what vacuum you use. Cheap carpet really only lasts about 5 years anyway. I'm on year 9 on my carpet with the dyson, no trouble at all.

But it's not cheap carpet.

With 8 cats and 4 dogs our DC07 gets a workout on a daily basis. We have had it since early 2004 and the only 2 recurring problems are the durability of the hose and the on/off switch. Other than those 2 issues the thing works like a champ.

After our last vacuum died (accidentally cracked the waste container) we bought a dyson. I was skeptical about it's cleaning power. We have a long rug in the living room, so I turned off the 'beater bar' because it always gets tangled in the carpet.

The amount of cat hair it pulled up was disgusting. I was very grossed out. It was like our previous vacuum did nothing at all. I had to empty the thing 3 times while cleaning our house. It was all cat hair buried in the carpet and dust. Granted we have long carpets and a few cats, but this was just wrong.

yea, after i got a dyson, i'm sold... good thing i got it at a discount.

like i said in a previous dyson thread, the amount of dog hair i pulled from the carpet was enough to make another golden retriever or two.

Ingenious engineering goes into his products. The use of cheap plastics is a turn off. If it were EDM'd from titanium it would be spectacular. The main parts would last forever - switch to an electronically commutated permanent magnet motor (brushless and similar to a PC fan - just turns at speeds up to 40,000 rpm) and you'd have an across the board winner.

Well until you tally up the price. It would probably cost $40,000. I bet people would buy it! It would be called the Titan of Dyson Monster
