I just bought this Dell Axim for $200 AR. Anyone know how these things compare to the Toshiba and Compaq's?

I bougt a Zaurus after playing with a Toshiba e740 for a week at work. I've never seen a hardware and software combo suck as hard as the XScale and PPC2K2.

Damn! I thought I couldn't go wrong with a Dell. Truth is, I bought this without much research so I prolly deserve it. Seems like people think that it really sucks.

Honestly I have to say that it depends on what your going to use it for. If your looking for Contact and Appoinment manangment your looking at a Palm. If you want networking features, the media will have you look at a PPC. I needed network conectivity. The Zaurus fit that. It didn't help that the top of the line Toshiba felt slow, and unresponsive - compared to the Zaurus that was half the speed.

I noticed that you didn't mention the Axim at all. Does that mean it's not good for anything?

Used a Palm. Have an Audiovox now, which works fine for me. Dont see why people should have problems with the Dell, especially if they never used one.

I have an Ipaq. I loved it at first, but now it's having issues up the wazoo. Feels kinda slow now. Maybe it's time for me to upgrade.

Sounds like you have a few "I don't like MS so I am going to recommend their compeditor's product responses in this thread. I don''t have one but they are cheap and you get a lot for the money and they have gotten great reviews so I don't see why they'd be a bad choice. I have been looking at them since before they even came out and I have been waiting for Dell to issue a 10% off coupon (I will be buying the $300 one) but every coupon they have issued since they came out has excluded the Axims. I think I am just going to buy one for the full price soon (hmm, I guess I can use the $50 off one time use coupon).

sure I can format. But the problem is that the ipaq can be realy pricky when it's synching with the desktop. I have an IBM microdrive that doesn't like to save it's data onto the hard drive. When I try manually copying it, it's picky about what to copy. And we all know that once you say yes to formatting, you agree to have all your files erased. Formatting and backing up on a PDA isn't as straightfoward as it is on a desktop.

no... PDAs are like a whole new zealotry, like the whole mac vs windows thing. people want you to believe that this or that sucks and is crap, but in reality, they all have their ups and downs. PPCs are better if you want to play games, watch movies, play music, or if you want to be able to work with documents easily. i find that the software is more powerful in general too, compared to the palm.

but the biggest reason i like PPC more than palm is because they have a much better/more natural handwriting recognition system (and yes, i was good at graffiti) and you can write anywhere on the screen, as opposed to having a huge chunk of your screen real estate being taken up by a place for you to write. when you receive your PPC, make sure to install microsoft transcriber, first thing :)

play games, watch movies, play music

Actually, Palm has way more games for cheaper too, also the Sonly Clie is the only pda with a wired remote, and it has the ability to turn off the screen and just use the MP3 feature using the wired remote, this is crucial if you are going to use your pda for music play back. As for watching movies, the clie has gMovie but I haven't compared it to Media player, beside the fact that when I was running media player on a e310 PPC it crashed more times than I can count.

1) Palm game can't compare to PocketPC games...just not enough horsepower and their control layout doesn't compare (most PocketPC's have at least 4 buttons and a cursor pad)
2) Casio PocketPC's have had wired remotes for Windows Media Player for quite some time
3) All PocketPC's have the ability to turn off their screens while playing MP3's
4) PocketPC have the ability to playback MANY different forms of audio and video files:

Windows Media Player: MP3, WMV, WMF, ASF
PocketTV: MPEG
Pocket MediaVideoPlayer (formally PocketDIVX): DIVX, MPEG, MP3
RealPlayer: RM, RA

There is no real reason to get a PalmOS based PDA anymore. They are no longer the cheapest and they are no longer the smallest.

The iPAQ 1910 is the smallest thing out there (4.2 ounces, .4 inches thick) and it goes for $299. It has was recently at Staples for $199. 200MHz, 48MB RAM
The Viewsonic V35 is $260 after rebate at Amazon.com (4.2 ounce, .4 inches thick). 300MHz, 36.45MB RAM
The Dells are $199 and $299 (cheaper after coupons) 300MHz, 32MB RAM; 400MHz, 64MB RAM

Besides, you can do WAY more with PocketPC's than you can with Palms.

My father just got his. He's so far very impressed with its ease at hooking up with a wifi test kit he brought home. Little does my mother know (very computer illiterate, but has learned to use win98) she's going to have one under the tree this year. All because my dad's gone through visor, Palm 515, and now he's kicking the axim tires. From what I hear, power users who want a pda for raw data, quick access, organization prefer the palm (less buttons and presses to get where/what you want) but graphical, windows hooked people like pocketpc. As far as media and games, well, yes, I would imagine pocketpc has got palm beat.

I have both, they both have their place:D

I nef with the Axim around the house & carry it on my days off, but use a m515 @ work, mostly because Epocrates isn't available on the PPC.

The real test will be when the PPC shrinks to a form factor that will rival Palm's size.

There's a rumor that Dell has become a Palm OS licensee, & it looks like they'll play both sides of the fence too.

Yes I know about the 1910, it's one model versus all of the large size PPC's...

limited expandability, non-standard headphone jack & 5 hour battery life, great sceen, removeable battery...

When the market of PPC's matures in a year or so, Palm will be having a few problems...

I've had my Axim for two weeks now and couldn't be happier. Not only can it keep my contacts and appointment calendar, it also does a stellar job playing MP3's and WMA's, playing PocketNES, Surfing the web wirelessly. Try to do that on any Palm or Sony. Not to mention for $100's less then decked out Clie or Tungsten.

:D <-- Click here. Same weight and thickness as the 1910 (4.2 ounces, .4" thick)
