Just bought a Zalman VF700-Cu needs some opinions plz...

I hope this is the proper place to post this.....if not--Im Sorry!!!

On this computer I have a Gigabyte Geforce 6600GT !!

I swapped out the stock fan for the zalman fan!
The Zalman fan came with 8 heat sinks for the video card!

As is so often the case there is NO clearance whatsoever for the heat sink on the Gigabyte card!
Even if I was to cut the heat sink fins all the way down they still would NOT fit!
Any suggestions?

Since the VF700-Cu is so close to the memory chips anyways is that a problem?

Do you think I should go ahead and cut the heat sinks anyways and mount then them?

Also the direction for the card show 4 heatsinks installed on the other side of the video card(exactly the same spots as on the side with the fan!)

Are there any issues with going ahead and mounting the heats sink on that side of the card?

Yes I have the card over clocked and it is very stable.

On this particular card supposedly you cannot monitor the hardware!

Yet before I updated the Bios Everest at Home did monitor the card temps!!
I would reflash the bios if I could the find a site to download the f1 bios which is what the card had before I updated the bios!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

So far no program I have downloaded will allow me to monitor the cards temp!

PC Wizard 2005-- No
Everest Home Edition - No
Riva Tuner -- No

I was thinking I could attach a temperature probe...but where would the best place be to attach the probe?

Im sorry for such a long post!!
Thank You all for any help you might be able to throw my way!!

is the agp version.. cause that isnt compatible with the mem heat sinks.. unless you are willing to cut them down, in that case i dont think it would really be worth it, why have little stumps on youre mem?? as for the memory on both sides, not all vid cards have memory on both sides. I know the 6800 series doesnt use mem on the bottom of the pcb. Im assuming youre 6600 gt has 8 mem chips on top. Of coarse ur not gonna be attaching the heatsinks to the pcb, if you actually see a memory chip on the back then you shoud attach them. I dont think you will though cause 6600gts dont have memory on the back of the card

yeah, you need to edit the bios to get the temps.

i made the ram sinks fit. i had to use pliers and bend off two rows of the spikes on each sink but then they would slide in under the core cooler. its a pita but worked.

as far as i can tell, the instructions showing the sinks going on both sides of the card are because its kind of a universal instruction set. i don't put them on the opposite side of any of my 6xxx series cards.

Wow!! I really appreciate all the quick informative responses!
Yep--AGP!!
Next Computer will be PCI Express!!
Yeah my card has 4 memory chips on top none on the bottom.
Yes--The picture of the heat sinks on the botton threw me for a loop!!

Can somebody tell me what I must do to in order to "hack" the bios so as to be able to monitor the temp?
Explicit instructions would be appreciated!

As soon as get a descent camera I will be posting some pics of both of my rigs!

Again Thank You for the quick replies!🙂

It looks like the original HSF does not cool the VRAM and indeed may heat them (n'est ce pas?), so even sans heatsinks the VF700 will be a significant improvement.

try coolbits 2.0 just google it , If u have to trim those heatsinks down to the brim just to make them fit i wouldnt put them on.. maybe save them for another vid card down the road. Remember that cooler is good for all 6 series line and you wont get that problem with the pci versions. I had an agp msi 6600gt that gave me the same problem. The card soon after died and is just collecting dust right now lol i dont really wanna sepnd 50 bucks to send it to china for rma. Im not saying putting that cooler on killed it, just a side note. Really consider saving those heatsinks trimming them would be a waste. That cooler combined with the heatsinks(In Tact) is awesome, without them its still much better than youre stock on the gigabyte as it was on my msi.

I wish to thank those of you who responded to my questions!!

ThankYou!!

What I ended up doing with my Gigabyte 6600GT AGP GV-N66T128D was I did a google search and found another site with the original Bios download for my card! I downloaded Gigabyte 6600GTD128MB Rev 01 and reflashed my card!

Then I rebooted the computer and sure enough....Everest Home edition read the card temperature as well as when I click on the geforce 6600GT tab it has Temp Settings!!

I also spoke to a techie where I get most of my parts and he told me that there are 8 heat sink for a reason. It seems 4 go on the front and 4 go on the back!

I have decided to refabricate some heatsinks that will work for the front of the card!

Again Thank You!
