Just bought a white 16gb 3GS. Recommend me some apps!

Im in the Navy and i bought this phone for $125 off of a fellow servicemember. Im going without a laptop for the next month or so, so this is my entertainment device until i get to live with my wife.

Anyway, i have 12mb/8mb cable wifi in my room here. I neex to know of some good tv, movie and game apps. Preferably free, but if its cheap i will look into it.

Notables i already have: Opera Mini, Pandora, Crackle, TV.com, Boost Magic, Mancala FS5, among others.

Id like to watch flash video once in a while. I had skyfire on my blackjack 2 but it was terribly slow. Is it worth it on the iPhone? Any good games to recommend?

Thanks for your time!

I have a 3GS as well. If you want cheap 3G (for Internet access outside of your Wifi bubble), you can get an iPad SIM and use it with an adapter ($15/250mb or $25/2gb + $10 per additional GB, per month). This is how I use my iPhone - just as a data-only device. Instructions here:

Netflix is the bomb. Hulu Plus if you prefer that. I like the Kindle app from Amazon, lets you read books (I've actually read a couple entire books on my iPhone when I haven't had access to anything else). Dropbox is also good - you can load your own PDF's, so if you want to read something like a Navy manual you can always have that handy.

I do use Skyfire from time to time. It's pretty decent. I use it for Flash and for websites that make my mobile Safari crash (Yahoo Email makes it crash, boo!).

As far as games go, Angry Birds is pretty addicting. A lot of people at work play Words with Friends, which is like a network version of Scrabble. Cut the Rope is fun. I like Flight Control a lot too.

Definitely check out Google Translate - you can speak English into it and it types it up, then speaks it out in the language you select. Really handy sometimes. I use Scanner Pro for doing scans (does a nice Scan-to-PDF with black & white tweaks and straightening and whatnot), sometimes you just need to grab a copy of a document and it's very useful. Camera+ is my favorite camera app, it lets you take pictures and quickly apply effects to make them look nice.

Thanks for the response! I have words with friends now too. Almost and exact clone of Yahoo's Literati. I dig. Does Skyfire play free hulu and justin.tv? Im looking for some nice, cheap entertainment.

The camera app and others look interesting.

It works for justin.tv but not for free Hulu. Hulu does not allow playback on any mobile browser. If there are any other sites you are curious about, you can check them here.

First of all, Scholzpdx, love your Louis CK picture. I just got an iPhone myself and am playing around with some mew apps. Angrybirds is fun, I also have the youtube app for watching videos. It is excellent, I have found, for listening to podcasts, it should allow you to download them for free right form the itunes app, which came on mine when I got it. Great forum too, look forward to other contributions as well!

You should mention that there is a free Hulu+ app (the Hulu+ service itself isn't free). My major complaint is that some shows aren't available on mobile devices even if you pay for H+. 🙁
