Just bought a Samsung HL-S5087W 50" DLP

Tell me how you like it? I pushed my parents to go LCD over DLP and they were debating between the Pioneer Elite and Samsung DLP, but I pushed them to go for the Sony 46" XBR2 which is just pure awesome.

Everyone says to get a plasma/lcdtv but with the DLPs....you just seem to get more for your money. I don't know enough about TVs.. 🙁

Plasmas are king of HDTV, but they come at a price. I'd rate Sony's XBR2 and XBR3 a close second, and DLPs third. All great TVs though. It just depends on personal preferences. For instance, DLP provides a GREAT picture but not as good viewing angles as plasmas or even Sony's XBR LCDs. But you do get a GREAT bang for your buck on the initial purchase.

Great TV fs5. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

$2000 shipped from ibuydigital.com. There are better prices out there, but this is the cheapest with a 8.5 rating on resellerratings.com.

You do get more for your money. A decent 1080p plasma would be way more than $2000. I think the color saturation on DLPs is better and the overall image is crisper. Not until you get into the $5000+ range can you get a plasma of the same size that rivals the picture quality of a good DLP.

If I were rich, I would definitely get a pioneer elite plasma though!

That's a good price for a great TV. You could have gotten it for a tad bit cheaper through OneCall, but nothing that would make you regret buying from the merchant you went through. Good job man.

Probably the cheapest 1080p plasma out now is Pioneer's PRO-FHD1, and the price on that set is ~$10,000. So yours was slightly cheaper. 😉

Doh, you're right it would've been cheaper by $25. Ah well. I'll keep that in mind for the future though. Onecall is a great site, I've purchased cameras from them before.

The Samsung HD-960 is a good upscaling DVD player to pair with it, it upscales to 1080p over HDMI. It's around $150 but does come with an HDMI cable.

. . . though DVDs also looked very nice using my old 480i Sony DVD player over both s-video and component, letting the DLP do its own upscaling.

Hmmm...Pioneer's PRO-FHD1 is the only 1080P native Plasma out right now isn't it? Well this is AFAIK anyway.

OP congrats on the purchase

Thanks for the tip, I haven't begun to look at a good dvd player to pair with it.
A quick search reveals a few complaints about it though ( http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=673545&page=11&pp=30 )

I'm happy with mine, I run HDMI to the HSL5087 and coax digital to the receiver for audio. After a month and a half I've had exactly one picture glitch where I had to turn the player off and on again, but I don't know whether it was the TV's fault (losing the HDMI signal) or the player, or the summer heat with no AC. When I powered up again I watched the rest of the movie without any problems.

It's not a _huge_ difference in quality from my old 480i player, just the little more detail. You'd probably be happy with the TV's own upscaling, I just watch a lot of DVDs and can justify the expense since I don't spend money on anything else.
