Just bought a R9600AIW for $150...should i keep it?

Originally i was debating whether or not to pay the $200 for a Radeon 9800 Pro, but i was at CC today where someone at ATHD said they saw a R9700AIW for $158. They were out of the 9700 but they had a 9600AIW for $150. Looked on pricewatch and couldn't find anything close to that price, so i bought it.

What do you think? They charge a restock fee there if it's opened so i want to make sure i want to keep it first.

I've heard the 9600 still performs admirably well with most games, and since i only occasionally play UT2004, i don't really need tons of power. Plus, i really wanted a remote control for watching DVDs and listening to music. I'm guessing the 9600 will handle most everything out there with reasonable resolution and frame rates. (Far Cry on that Asus/AMD64 3200+ bundle, for example).

Comments?

You are going to have to make that decision but if you capture videos and do more PVR stuff than play games the 9600AIW might not be a bad buy....but if you are as excited as I am for upcoming Doom 3 and Halflife 2 you might be better going with a 9800pro (like I did)

eh...if i can play doom 3 at 800x600 or so i'll be happy. If not, oh well. I won't be heartbroken. I dont do a whole lot of PVR but i DO like watching DVDs using an SVideo output and a remote control. That's a big selling point for me. At i already have a TV Wonder so i can use the picture in picture option...

Overall, i think i'm going to keep it. Just wondering what limitations it has and what other people's experiences have been

well, if the 9700pro is just ten dollars more, see if you could raincheck that.

The 9600proaiw is great at its price/preformance and is hard to beat

BUT for 8 dollars more the leap to 9700 is well worth it and beats out that price/preformance easily

The front of the box says it comes with a free coupon for HL2 (presumably when it comes out). It also includes free coupon to upgrade to Remote Wonder II, thought i'm not sure what that is.

I doubt that the 9700 will still be around, since i picked up the last 9600 and the 9700s were being clearanced. I guess i got a fairly good deal though, based on reviews and prices online. CC itself shows this card as being 200 online. I think i'll keep it...

Update: Decided to keep the card. 9700 is nowhere to be found in nearly every CC in the area. Installation went fairly smooth and everything looks ok so far with the card. Haven't really tried any games on it, but will get to it soon. Overclocking potential is supposed to be amazing with this card.

The only problem I've run into so far is having an ATI TV Wonder already and the TV Tuner on that addon card acting as the primary one instead of the secondary. But i have yet to research that topic--i'm sure it'll be a fairly easy fix.

I'm not at my AIW PC currently, but there is a configuration option to pick the tuner for both the Primary TV and the tuner for Multiview. I "think" its in the MMC configuration utility, but I'll post when i get home to my rig.

btw, the additional RW2 makes this a pretty good deal. You'll want to take advantage of that as it is superior to RW1 (which is still a very good FM remote itself) The HL2 coupon may actually be handy someday...IIRC, if you act before HL2 is released, the coupon allows you to receive the Valve Premier Pack free, which includes the games: Half-Life, Counter Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life: Opposing Force and Ricochet.

OK, you can launch MMC configuration from launch pad or from ATI Multimedia Center program group. Go to the TV property sheet and you can configure both the Primary TV Capture Source and mulTView Capture source. That should fix you up.

If you plan on using the AIW features religously then I wouldn't keep the card. You can get a refurbed Radeon 9800 Pro for $166 on newegg (which is ALOT faster than the 9600 PRO). The 9600 Pro is a decent card but its starts to show its age in newer DX9 games.
