I'm poorer to the tune of about $2,400 but I think it's worth it. ;)

15'' MBP
2.2GHz i7
8GB RAM
750GB 7200RPM HDD
high-res glossy screen

Should be delivered by Friday or next Monday at the latest. My plan is to get a Optibay and swap the Superdrive for the 750GB HDD and put a 128GB SSD in the main slot for apps and the OS.

This will replace my aging early-2007 MBP. It's served me very well, but it's showing its age. I'm probably going to keep it around to tinker with unless I can sell it and get a few hundred bucks for it. :)

I personally woulda waited it out to see what the refresh looks liked in a month or two...but if it's what you want then enjoy :)

They are nice laptops.

It's Apple... no matter what I get, there will be a refresh in a few months. ;)

My current laptop is going on 5 years old now and desperately needs to retire. Starting next Monday I'm also going to be working from home two days a week, so I wanted to make sure I was up and running before that.

Stick an SSD into the MBP. It'll feel like a new machine.

Paying Apple $200 for $40 worth of RAM wasn't a good move, nor was paying $150 for an extra 250GB of spinning platter hard drive space.

The only upgrades worth ordering on MacBook Pros are the CPU and screen.

So nice, although the same config in a refurb might have saved you a few hundred

Put the SSD in the Optibay. Both ports are SATA3 but, unless somethings changed, I believe only the port the hard drive is shipped in has shock protection in case you drop it or something.

In the old one too? Cuz that will also make it feel a lot snappier.

Oh yea, totally. I dropped an SSD into my mom's OG BlackBook, that sucker practically flies now, especially compared to the 5400 RPM platter that it came stock with.

Congrats on the new laptop... I had a 2007 era (Santa Rosa) 17" MBP, which is now seeing duty as the main home machine for a good friend of mine. They still hold up pretty well, but this one has trouble running Lion so it went back to 10.6 and is working fine.

Congrats! I picked up my first macbook pro this time last year. It was the first time I bought a non-ios apple device and I absolutely love it. The laptop is what turned me into an apple fan. I've had it right around a year now and it looks and performs just as good as the day I bought it. I here talk of a redesign and I tell myself I want one, but when I go back to my current macbook I realize I have absolutely no need for one.

I don't know about anyone else, but using a single SSD only (no optibay mechanical hdd) is a dream. My laptop is not only fast, but its dead silent and vibration free.

However using a single SSD may call for some space sacrifices.

In your case, it makes sense to buy now, but the comment about there always being a refresh in a few months no matter what you get, is not quite accurate. Apple only updates its MacBook Pros about once a year, or sometimes twice.

Plus the new models should get USB 3 support.

There haven't been any signs of Apple supporting USB3. They might hold out for a little longer before adopting that since they're all about thunderbolt.

I think Apple will support USB3 the second Intel releases it in Ivy Bridge. They'd be crazy not to - it's free at that point.

I'm hoping that Apple would adopt USB3 too since its USB2 compatible, but knowing Apple, they may still not use it because of Thunderbolt.

That's my fear. They intentionally gimp it to try and push thunderbolt. Bleh.

They've already backed thunderbolt. They're not going to "downgrade" to usb3.
Huh? There is no rule that states a machine Thunderbolt cannot have USB 3. They already sell Thunderbolt machines with USB 2 of course. It's not as if they got rid of USB 2 when they shipped Thunderbolt.

$2400? Even by Apple standards that seems awfully high for the specs listed...

I saw the price and immediately assumed Apple RAM & SSD upgrade, but you only got one of those so I'm confused.

I purchased a 13" MBP about a year ago for around ~$1650 and it came with a 256GB SSD (though it had an i5 not an i7).

The 13" machines are significantly cheaper, and it's even cheaper if you got a refurb... which is why I often buy refurbs.

Nice. I'm waiting for Apple to put retina displays on their Macbooks, but that could probably be next year or later.
