I have 384mb on my laptop. I would say thats the min I would have.

Depends how much *work* you intend to do on it. Not much multi tasking then 256mb is alright. Ram is cheap anyway.

Shared memory is perfectly fine. As long as he doesn't intend to game on his laptop which I think he won't much. Or games that require a lot of graphical power anyway. Nice buy.

I wouldn't by a Dell if you gave me the money. Dell's are pieces of sh|t. Buy quality and spend the extra to buy an IBM. You'll thank yourself later.

Because I get a 100 MIR for only getting 128. I am ordering Two 512 meg sticks from crucial to give me a gig. It only has two slots so I saw no need to get anything more than 128 since I will be chunking it for 1GB of ram. The crucial sticks are 133 a piece for a 512... so basically it will cost me 166 after my rebate for a GIG of ram.

I got a nice D-Link Router and a Netgear NIC and used a 20% off coupon that PAB gave me for peripherals.

Evan - make sure you test out that Netgear card. I tried a Netgear USB Wireless adapter to share the DSL in my house - that damn thing couldn't pick up a signal unless I held the adapter ABOVE my head. Oh, and it's smart ordering the RAM seperate. :) Good thinking

Crucial has a 20 off 512 meg coupon, so it will be 40 dollars off of both sticks. I already checked and they are stackable.
