I bought the NEC 3500A burner with the newegg ext. warranty since i've never bought a NEC before. its definitly one of the better drives out there and my bro needs a new one and i want a new one. Given my bro my old dvd burner and gettin a new one.

I bought it because it sounds promising with a ton of new firmware being introduced.

any thoughts or opinions about it?

I am looking for a new burner as well.. my Pioneer 105 took a dump on me two days ago without warning. It now reads NOTHING. I wont buy pioneer again as I have found many many similiar stories online about the 105/106. I wouldnt be so peeved if it stopped burning (it has afterall been 18 months) but it wont even read ANYTHING at all. :/

I was considering between saving some money by getting an Optorite burner or avoiding spending much of anything at all and getting an Artec dvdrom cd-r for 27 bucks. Any suggestions?

I work in a pc shop and we have no returns on pioneer 108's, much more with lg and lite-on. All three work quite well right out of the box but pioneer seems to support much more media ( haven't checked up on media support in a few months though). I've had my pioneer 104 since it came out and I've burned so many discs I've lost count. If you want my two cents go for the pioneer 108. 16 dvd-r/+r and 4x dual. I don't know Nec well but the shop I work for has trouble with RMA'ing NEC products.
