I just picked up really cheap a MAC performa 6218CD(75MHZ 48mb ram). Right now it has no network card so I will have to get that or go with something other than seti. What suggestions are there for use of this machine for the good of the team or should I give it to the kids to play games? Also anyone know any good linux ports for mac hardware?

thanks,

Hi ReaganCRW 🙂

Well... How about a paperweight or doorstop? 😛 j/k 😉

Mac Linux Distros from LinuxPlanet.com

I dunno about a DC project, seems slightly pointless to run anything on 75mhz... 😱, nonetheless, experimenting can be fun! 🙂

Kick it.😛 Seriously, it's about all you can do. The RC5 rates on that thing are putrid, if I'm correct that that's a PPC601 chip, we're talking 43 RC5 WU's a day. You can forget about SETI(it's really ment for the OS X CLI anyways), OGR, and I imagine F@H is out of the question too(They have a Mac client, right?). More or less, on a machine that slow, it's RC5 or bust(it with a sledgehammer😉).

Actually, we have about a half-a-dozen of those serving as doorstops at my workplace. 😱

A friend of mine did make a rather cool fishtank out of a classic Macintosh, though. 🙂

Looks like its Linux'ing then 🙂 at least its better than my Mac IIci!! That thing has a 16mhz 62030 I think... (pre-PPC)
