The state that the car is going to be titled in. In your case, Georgia.

Do I just take it to the DMV with me?

yes, and fill out a form and pay some $

they process and issue a new title for GA (if everything is kosher)

I don't know about Georgia, but it too late now :), if you ever buy and out of state car again it's always wise to find out what you need to pay/do first. Sometimes that 'good deal' ends up a rape.

you mean paying the tax? yeah, that is the other thing besides the fee to transfer the title that they'll probably want, the tax on the value

call your DOT, they will tell you

i live in pa, and have both bought and sold cars in jersey and to nj people

when i bought a car in nj, all they had to do was sign the back of the title, id bring the car into pa, go to the notary, pay pa taxes and transfer fee's and a few weeks later i got my title

when i sold a car to a guy in nj, i had to go to the notary here in pa, he had to pay to have the transfer done, and he was on his way

There are extra fees much of the time when a car is imported interstate.

You always have to pay tax and the title fee.

I bought my car in a different state, and besides the $10 inspection fee and a few dollars for a new title, there were no other fees.

What fees? Unless you live in CA (smog exemption), you shouldn't have to pay any extra fees.

No extra fees going from PA to CO either. Just the CO title fee & sales tax.

Well, to be fair, there are 2450 possible interstate transfers, of which we've only found about 5 that don't have extra fees. So there's still room to find em.

Actually, I'll add another ... VA -> PA didn't have any extra fees that I recall either.

Oh gee, I am wrong again because a couple situations. I got about 15mins before I need to get to the gym.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/nonresident.htm , they used to have an out of state smog impact fee of $300 as well but I couldn't find it. In general the smog in any state is a risk especially if the state buying from has none.

Ohio is $5 ($3.50 inspection, 1.50 additional)...wow...but all I could find.

Another thing is titles vary from state to state on what's allowed and how it's handled. You can buy a car with a clean looking title to find out in your state that vehicle needs a salvaged one or cannot be registered.

This was the problem I experienced, someone had bought a car that had a salvage title. They knew that. However; the car was never a totaled/insurance loss. I don't know the details of it all, but it's somekind of loophole other's use for something the state didn't like and wouldn't register it. I have no idea the outcome...

If I get some time to research today I will add.
