Just bought a bottle of absinthe

But apparently it is 🙂

The selection was limited so I went with Hill's. $80 for the bottle, but that should definitely last me a while. I read a review on the net that had one word in it: windex. Ah well, not that I expected it was gonna taste good anyways.

So anywho, I'm gonna try it out next time I have a day off work and watch some wizard of oz/pink floyd dark side of the moon and see what happens.

Point of this thread: So what exactly is the procedure with this stuff again? Brown sugar in a spoon, heat it up with a lighter to caramelize it, dip it in the absinthe, stir it up, and down it? That right?

Update:

Okay, so I tried it last night. Did the whole sugar on a fork, pour absinthe over it, light the sugar, pour water over it, stir it all up, and drink it. The first sip was actually pretty tasty, but after that I could really taste the alcohol. I figure I used about 1.5-2 oz of this stuff, which is actually fairly weak on the wormwood.

Effects: No freaky hallucinations or anything of course, but it DID have a noticably different effect from straight alcohol drinks. Felt kinda cool actually 🙂

Verdict: It's definitely a neat drink to have once in a while if you're looking for something a bit more than just feeling drunk. It's kind of $$$, so drinking it on a regular basis for fun probably isn't a good idea. I'm going to look into getting some stronger (wormwood wise) stuff off the net when I'm nearly done with this bottle. Should be interesting.

It depends on how much wormwood is in it (ie how bitter it is), if there's not a lot then just drink it on the rocks.

If it's too bitter for you then you've almost got it right, you basically light some sugar on a spoon to caremalise it then put the flames out with some water, then you mix the sugar and water in a glass with the absinth.

It tastes minging but the effects can be very interesting (if you've actually got the real stuff that is and not the usual fake crap you buy over there)

*Uuuhhh*. (Not like the braindead sound, more like a shiver-sound)

Me and some friends decided to try Absinthe as the choice to get drunk one evening. Well, it goes down easier than for example pure vodka (when you are drinking pure shots), but it makes you feel so ill. Like nauseous(did I even spell that right?). What we tried was much easier getting very drunk on, than being wormwood-affected by (at least the way we drank it).

This it was

Hmmm, legal in Canada? I'll have to find a good liquor store in Windsor then...or pick up a bottle next time I'm in Toronto.

excellent.

The stuff I bought is 10 mg thujone/kg. It's what's required by the UK and Czech Republic (where it was made). Not the highest, but it should still give a good kick.

Thujone containing absinthe available in liqour stores, including the Czech brand Hill's Absinth which is a very low thujone brand. We have been told that all brands of absinthe commercially available in Canada contain extremely low levels of thujone

Sucka for you! 😀

It should be noted that bringing anything in the US prohibited by Customs can result in confiscation of the item, a fine or jailtime or all three.

That's neat, I won't have to worry about stupid customs taking my absinthe away. The other day I saw it on a menu in a bar over here, but when I asked the barman to show me to bottle, it was some kind of french stuff, 55% and not green (plus the barman said "its not the kind that gives you hallucinations). I'll try to look for the real stuff in the upscale liquor stores, but since I plan on visiting prague I will definately get some authentic stuff 😉

Btw:
The proper ways to drink absinthe?we asked Martha!

1. Pour a shot of absinthe into a glass. Contemplate its green perfection and try not to look like a giddy American.

2a. French method: Place a sugar cube on a slotted spoon, then drip six to eight parts chilled water over cube and into glass.

2b. Czech method: Fill a spoon with sugar, then absinthe. Burn until the sugar caramelizes, then mix, adding water.

3. Add more water or sugar to taste, then stir until a cloud?known as the ?louche??forms in the glass. Drink up!

Yeah, everything I've read about it says it's illegal to import or sell in the US, but that possession is legal.

why you guys all want to waste your time on that pitiful excuse for a hallucinogen is beyond me. all it does is rot your brain and you don't even really trip. it's like the booze version of sniffing glue.

So I wonder if you can manufacture it then?

Might taste good? I dunno. I'm not buying it to get high off of.

And I'm pretty sure it doesn't rot your brain. People used to get all messed up off of it, but that was because cheap distilleries used to add copper as a colouring and copper messes you up.

You can. There are kits you can buy on the internet. It's basically:

take a bottle of everclear, add packet of wormwood, let sit a week, strain, add packet of other herbs, let sit 3 days, strain, serve.
