So I pulled the trigger:
Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 980X 6 Core LGA1366 Gulftown 3.33GHZ 12MB Processor Retail Box

and a:
EVGA X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 3PCIE-16 PCI-E1 2PCI SLI SATA2 eSATA Dual GBLAN Motherboard (132-BL-E758-A1)

Both from NCIX.

I am going to be sick to my stomach. Why I spent the cash I have no idea. I am going from a Q9550 with an ATI 4890 to the above set with an 480 GTX and I sooooo did not really need this.

I blame this site, I blame you all for the "need" and want to upgrade. God.. At least 2 villages somewhere desolate and in need, could live a year off what I just spent on this. They could have named a few children after me.

I better freaking discover and crack some aliens messages from space or add a few more digits to Pi... I swear.

On a side note... any ideas on RAM please :) LOL.
12 GB would be swell... why not.

I think a 1090T + a Crosshair IV and possible 2-4 5870's would have been a better path at the moment.

Well, why not run PrimeGrid on your unused cycles and help discover new huge prime numbers? Seriously, distributed computing rocks when you have a massive rig.

You could even run F@H on the GPU (once they release the Fermi client for it), at the same time. Just make sure you have a good PSU to power everything, DC takes a good amount of power.

see, with 2000 dollars, you could have probably bought two i7920 systems.

You can always send your new hardware to me if you feel that uncomfortable, you know, in fact I'm sure you'd feel better after that. By the way I'm not trying to persuade you.

Be sure to register your EVGA board for the warranty. It's real simple. I just learned from my mistake of not doing it. Now, my 760 A1 is a 1yr warranty :\

I would go for the Eco kits (1.35v DRAM) infact, that's what I'm going to buy if these Elpida hyper ICs die.

You forgot a minor detail; the fact you just use a computer for message boards and solitaire :p

See my shinigami is a lot worse then your devil... :(

Weak... you need another GTX 480 for SLI.

LOL... no he should of waited for the 512sp's to come out.. but that will make him spend more money again.

LOL, if I could justify the cash I would have picked up a 980x. Sticking with my i7 930 for now.

Also, I hate using water cooling. Makes my case too heavy to lug around to lan parties or wherever I want.

Is this for gaming? How exactly does a 6 core benefit you?

It helps Intel fund their R&D so we "lower" end PC builders get to enjoy $300 Sandy Bridges :) It has to be said though that unlike ALL the other previous EE chips, at least 980X packs 2 extra cores on 32nm, overclocks better than 45nm i7s and has AVX instructions.

980X doesn't have AVX, does it? I thought that was exclusively new to Sandy Bridge varients. Perhaps you mean AES-NI rather than AVX?

My brother just bought a 88 mustang gt with a bored over engine, edelbrock intake, cam, headers, racing clutch and transmission for $2200. Thing runs like a champ pushing 400hp. I think I'd rather have that.

Funny, I was going to get a new Exhaust system for my car for 1/2 of this price. And it might actually make a difference from an i7 920 upgrade hehe.
