The price is reasonable but the trannys suck. Hopefully it's already been changed.
Nice rides though, enjoy!

Yah like the previous posters said, those cars were known for transmission failure. :(

Like everyone said. Watch the transmission. The 3rd gear in that transmission is made of glass. My MDX had to have it's transmission fixed.

that's why you don't buy car on impulse... seller was just looking for somebody like you

i hope you at least have driven the car and noticed that tranny works ok... for now.

even if transmission was changed once, it might not be enough.

My friend's Odyssey needed it changed twice. If you got it replaced before 2005, chances are itll need it again.

Then no, you probably didn't make the right decision. Price seems ok but not particularly great. Miles are lowish, though.

To get it replaced if it does die you're looking at a few thousand bucks with labor, give or take.

One guy in that link above said $4k. Maybe that is common but I feel that if you brought it to a transmission shop and not dealer you could do it for less. I may be wrong, though. It is an Acura, not a dime-a-dozen Chevy Malibu or something for which there must be comparatively gobs more transmissions available.

You should always assume when you buy used that you may need some thousands in repairs. This is why it's worth buying either a throw-away used car or one that is new enough to have warranty left or make sure you have cash reserves.

Where did you buy this car? If you are a local TO chances are you bought a ruin from some middle-eastern stealer.

Whoa. Didn't think I'd ever hear that one.

Car salesmen of all colors cheat people.

If it was changed before 2005 chances are it will fail again. You need to double check on that before.

Do the transmissions fail ever ~4 years, or was there some change to the transmission in 2005 which fixed the issue(s)?

Design change (I believe there was some extra lubrication passages or something added later to fix the 3rd gear issue)

They added some oil jets or something to assist with cooling. But even that was a band-aid. My Accord had the oil jet recall performed and still toasted its transmission. After that I learned not to trust Honda's service intervals on them.

My advice to people with these trannys is to change the transmission fluid with Honda ATF every 2-3 engine oil changes. That's all it takes for it to start getting discolored from being slowly toasted. The RECOMMENDED service interval on my Accord for the fluid was 120,000 miles. The ACTUAL interval it appears to need is roughly 10X that frequent! On the plus side, changing the ATF is only slightly more complicated than changing oil and it's not a huge hardship to do it yourself.

my 2001 TL failed at 120k. Trans was shot even tho it was serviced by acura. I've read that automatic trans needs to be replaced like twice in the vehicle's lifetime.
